There are few bits of geek culture more enduring, or more revealing, than the Easter egg.
Long before post-credit scenes became mandatory and YouTube filled up with breakdowns of hidden references, secret cameos and blink-and-you’ll-miss-it details, Easter eggs were something smaller, stranger and more personal. A hidden room in an Atari game. A developer’s name tucked inside the code. A message buried in software. A wink from creator to audience, waiting for the right person to spot it.
That’s the story at the centre of the latest ‘Geekstorians’, the newly Webby-nominated podcast, which returns with a special Easter episode exploring how hidden messages, secret features and buried in-jokes grew from acts of quiet rebellion into a full-blown language shared between creators and audiences.
The new episode starts with Warren Robinett’s famous hidden room in ‘Adventure’ on the Atari 2600, widely regarded as the first great video game Easter egg, before tracing the spread of hidden content through the 1980s and 1990s. Along the way, Dave digs into the rise of the Konami Code, Microsoft’s increasingly bizarre software secrets, Pixar’s long-running A113 tradition, the golden age of hidden DVD extras, and the point where the hunt itself became the story through giant Alternate Reality Games such as ‘The Beast’ and ‘I Love Bees’.
It also looks at how the modern blockbuster turned Easter egg hunting into an industry of its own, with entire online communities dedicated to spotting, decoding and cataloguing every hidden reference packed into films, games and television shows. But at the heart of it, this is still a story about the same simple idea: somebody put something there, and somebody else found it.
The special lands at a pretty perfect moment for the show too. ‘Geekstorians’ has just been nominated for a Webby Award in the Podcasts – History category, making this Easter special a very nice bridge between Season 1 and what comes next.
And what comes next is not far away. Season 2 arrives next week, with Season 3 already in the works.
