Lucasfilm Announces ‘Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord’ Season 2 As Disney+ Series Debuts Today

by Dave Elliott

Lucasfilm is clearly feeling confident about Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, as the animated series has already landed a Season 2 renewal before Season 1 has even properly got going.

The news was announced by Lucasfilm President and Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni, with Lucasfilm confirming that the next chapter of the Maul-focused animated series is already in the works from Lucasfilm Animation. That is a pretty strong show of faith in the new series, especially given Season 1 only begins rolling out this week on Disney+.

With Filoni announcing the renewal of a Filoni-created series while also serving as Lucasfilm’s President and Chief Creative Officer, you do get the sense the boardroom chat may have gone something like: “Mr Filoni, should we give this a second season?” “Excellent idea, Mr Filoni.”

Set in the shadow of the Empire, ‘Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord’ follows Maul as he attempts to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet beyond Imperial reach. Along the way, he encounters a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan who may become exactly the kind of apprentice he needs in his ongoing quest for revenge. It sounds like a setup that leans hard into the darker, pulpy side of Star Wars, which feels like a very natural fit for one of the franchise’s most compelling villains.

The voice cast is led by Sam Witwer (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) returning as Maul, alongside Gideon Adlon (The Society) as Devon Izara, Wagner Moura (Narcos) as Brander Lawson, Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd) as Two-Boots, Dennis Haysbert (24) as Master Eeko-Dio Daki, Chris Diamantopoulos (Silicon Valley) as Looti Vario, Charlie Bushnell (Diary of a Future President) as Rylee Lawson, Vanessa Marshall (Star Wars Rebels) as Rook Kast, David W. Collins (Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi) as Spybot, A.J. LoCascio (Star Wars: Visions) as Marrok, and Steve Blum (Star Wars Rebels) as Icarus.

Created by Dave Filoni and based on Star Wars and characters created by George Lucas, the series has been developed by Filoni and Matt Michnovetz, with Brad Rau serving as supervising director. The executive producer lineup includes Filoni, Athena Yvette Portillo, Matt Michnovetz, Brad Rau, Carrie Beck, and Josh Rimes, with Alex Spotswood as co-executive producer.

For Lucasfilm, this also continues the trend of using animation to flesh out corners of the galaxy that live-action does not always have time to explore. Maul has already had one of the strangest and richest arcs in modern Star Wars, spanning The Clone Wars, Rebels, and even Solo, so giving him a full series was already an intriguing move. Locking in a second season this early suggests Lucasfilm sees this as more than a one-off.

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord‘ Season 1 premiered Today (Monday, 6th April 2026) on Disney+ with a two-episode launch.
