The ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise is heading for the small screen, as Peacock and Universal Television develop a new scripted television series based on the blockbuster movie saga.
The news was announced at the NBCUniversal Upfront presentation by franchise star and executive producer Vin Diesel (Guardians of the Galaxy), who revealed that plans are underway to expand the world of ‘Fast & Furious’ into live-action television. According to Deadline, Diesel also suggested there may be more than one show in the works, saying: “Peacock is launching four shows in the Fast and the Furious universe.” However, the officially announced project is currently one scripted series in development at Peacock.
Details on the plot are currently being kept firmly under the hood, with the logline simply listed as “More to Come…” which is about as ‘Fast & Furious’ as announcements get. Cars? Probably. Family? Almost certainly. Gravity-defying nonsense that makes physicists quietly sob into their calculators? We can but hope.
The pilot will be written by Mike Daniels (Sons of Anarchy, Shades of Blue, The Rockford Files) and Wolfe Coleman (Shades of Blue), who will also serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. Diesel executive produces alongside Sam Vincent for One Race, with Neal Moritz and Pavun Shetty of Original Film, Jeff Kirschenbaum, and Chris Morgan also executive producing. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.
The ‘Fast & Furious’ saga has become one of Universal Pictures’ biggest franchises, spanning eleven films and earning more than $7 billion worldwide. What began with street racing in 2001 has since evolved into a globe-trotting action series involving heists, spies, submarines, satellites, magnets, and at one point, yes, space. The franchise has also expanded into toys, video games, the animated Netflix series ‘Fast & Furious Spy Racers’, and the spin-off film ‘Hobbs & Shaw’.
Speaking on stage, Diesel explained that the franchise team has been careful about expanding the brand, but the demand from fans pushed them towards television.
“As you all know, we are very precious about these movies, but over the last decade, we’ve realised that the fans have wanted more; they wanted us to expand the legacy characters, their stories,” he said. “And for the last decade, the desire has been for us to enter the TV space.”
He added that he became more comfortable with the idea after Universal Studios chief Donna Langley also took oversight of NBCUniversal’s TV operation.
“That’s when I knew that the integrity of the characters, the international appeal, what makes us all feel like family will be protected in the TV space,” he said.
The announcement comes as the franchise celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2026, with Universal also confirming that the next film chapter, Fast Forever, is set to race into cinemas on Friday, 17th March 2028.
The ‘Fast & Furious’ TV series is currently classed as “in development” so may, or may not, make it to series. We’ll let you know when we hear more!
