Prime Video has officially ordered Fourth Wing to series, moving the long-gestating adaptation of Rebecca Yarros’ global romantasy phenomenon one very large dragon-step closer to screens.

Based on the first book in Yarros’ bestselling Empyrean series, ‘Fourth Wing’ follows Violet Sorrengail, a twenty-year-old who had expected to live a quieter life among the Scribes. Unfortunately for Violet, her mother, a powerful General in the military of Navarre, has other ideas, forcing her into the brutal world of Basgiath War College. There, candidates are trained under a fairly unforgiving “graduate or die” philosophy as they attempt to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.

Meredith Averill, whose credits include The Haunting of Hill House, Locke & Key and Wednesday, is adapting the novel for television and will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Lisa Joy, co-founder of Kilter Films, will direct the pilot and also executive produce.

The project has been in development for a while, after Amazon MGM Studios optioned the rights to the first book back in 2023, not long after Fourth Wing became a massive publishing hit. The series order, announced during Amazon’s 2026 Upfront presentation, is the biggest step forward yet for the adaptation.

There has been some movement behind the scenes during development. Moira Walley-Beckett, known for Breaking Bad and Anne with an E, was previously attached as showrunner, while WandaVision and Agatha All Along creator Jac Schaeffer was later reported to have been in discussions to take on the series. Averill is now confirmed in the role.

Yarros will also executive produce, alongside Michael B. Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo via Outlier Society, Jonathan Nolan, Lisa Joy and Athena Wickham via Kilter Films, and Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark via Premeditated Productions. Amazon MGM Studios produces the series.

“I’m thrilled to be working with this dedicated, experienced team and grateful for their passion for both the books and the readership behind them,” said Yarros.

“Violet’s journey in Fourth Wing has sparked a global phenomenon, captivating millions of readers and building an intensely passionate fanbase around its world, characters, and emotional stakes,” said Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television, Amazon MGM Studios. “Rebecca Yarros’ brilliant series is one of the most anticipated adaptations in the world, and with Meredith and our valued partners at Kilter, Outlier, and Premeditated, we’re bringing it to life in a way that honors what fans love about the story.”

The Empyrean series is currently planned as a five-book arc. Iron Flame, the second novel, continued Violet’s story after Fourth Wing, while the third book, Onyx Storm, was published in January 2025. Deadline reports that separate TV instalments based on each book are possible, should the first season prove successful, which seems like the sort of thing Prime Video would very much like to happen.

A key element of Violet’s story is that she has Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a connective tissue condition also experienced by Yarros herself. That detail has been a major part of why the books have resonated with many readers, alongside all the dragons, danger, romance, rivalries, and emotionally devastating fantasy chaos.

Kilter Films already has a strong relationship with Prime Video thanks to its work on Fallout, while Outlier Society, founded by Michael B. Jordan, also has a first-look film and television deal with Amazon. Given the scale of the books and the intensity of the fanbase, Prime Video is clearly lining this one up as a major fantasy drama.

Fourth Wing does not yet have a premiere date but will air on Prime Video in the UK. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
