‘The Lincoln Lawyer‘ is getting ready to park up for good, as Netflix confirms the legal drama will end with its upcoming fifth season.
Whilst we will give that news a hearty BOOO, this does appear to be a creative choice rather than Netflix simply cancelling something, which does seem to have become a weekly feature at this point. The series, led by Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (6 Underground) as Los Angeles defence attorney Mickey Haller, is currently in production on its fifth and final season, which will consist of 10 episodes. The final run is inspired by Resurrection Walk, the seventh book in Michael Connelly’s The Lincoln Lawyer series.
“All good things must come to an end, but thankfully sometimes how they come to an end is up to us,” said creator, co-showrunner, and executive producer Ted Humphrey and co-showrunner and executive producer Dailyn Rodriguez. “From the very beginning, the mission was always not only to tell the story of Mickey Haller and his compatriots, but also to give that story a proper conclusion. And while it is, of course, bittersweet, it’s also an amazing opportunity to bring this adventure to a close and perhaps chart a new course for some of our characters into the future.”
They added, “We are immensely grateful to Netflix and A+E Studios for the opportunity to land this plane the right way. But most of all, we are grateful to the fans all around the world for watching and supporting the show. We promise you, we are right now building a final season that will provide the satisfying finale Mickey Haller deserves. We can’t wait to share it with you!”
The final season sees Mickey’s world upended when Emi Finch, a half-sister he never knew existed, arrives with a plea for help. She asks him to free a wrongfully convicted woman, sending Mickey into a gruelling habeas petition to overturn a six-year-old murder conviction. Naturally, because this is ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’, the deeper he digs, the more corrupt, dangerous, and generally murder-board-worthy everything becomes.
That half-sister addition is also an interesting adaptation choice. In the novel, Mickey Haller teams up with his half-brother Harry Bosch to help free a woman they believe was wrongly convicted. That works perfectly well on the page, but it creates an obvious issue for the TV adaptation. While ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ sits at Netflix, Bosch is already tied to Amazon’s live-action Connelly universe, which continues through ‘Ballard‘ and the upcoming prequel ‘Bosch: Start Of Watch‘. So, rather than borrowing Bosch from another streamer’s playground, the final season introduces Emi Finch, played by Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother), as Mickey’s previously unknown half-sister.
Having only just saved himself from a wrongful conviction in Season 4, Mickey now finds himself trying to correct an enormous miscarriage of justice for someone else. The new case will force him to confront not only corruption and lies, but also the messy legacy of family, both the one he chose and the one he never knew he had.
Alongside Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Season 5 will star Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) as Emi Finch, with Becki Newton (Ugly Betty), Jazz Raycole (Jericho) and Angus Sampson (Fargo) also returning. Neve Campbell (Scream), Krista Warner, Angelica Maria (The Book of Life) and Gigi Zumbado (Bridge and Tunnel) will recur.
A hefty list of new recurring guest stars is also joining the final run, including Chris Diamantopoulos (The Sticky) as Frank Silver, Corbin Bernsen (L.A. Law) as Richard Finch, Diane Guerrero (Doom Patrol) as Natalia, Iker Garcia (The Pitt) as Rafa Wagner, Patty Guggenheim (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law) as Allison Finch, Richard Cabral (Mayans M.C.) as Benny Perez, Steve Howey (Shameless) as Brian Cunningham, Teresa Maria (Narcos: Mexico) as Tina Perez, Amy Aquino (Bosch) as Judge Olivia Alcott, Angela Trimbur (Search Party) as Felicia, Elpidia Carrillo (Predator) as Muriel Perez, Nate Corddry (The Testaments) as Jimmy Finch, Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica) as Brooke Miller, and Keir O’Donnell (High Desert) as DDA Lucas Peralta.
The series is created for television by David E. Kelley and developed by Ted Humphrey. Humphrey and Dailyn Rodriguez serve as co-showrunners and executive producers, alongside Michael Connelly, David E. Kelley, Ross Fineman, Barry Jossen, Tana Jamieson and Matthew J. Lieberman. The series is produced by A+E Studios.
Seasons 1 to 4 of ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ are available to stream now on Netflix.
