The BBC has revealed a raft of new cast members joining ‘Peaky Blinders‘, as the Shelby saga moves into a new era set in post-war Birmingham.
The upcoming sequel series, which is currently filming in and around Digbeth Loc. Studios in Birmingham, is set a decade after World War Two. As the city begins to rebuild, that reconstruction becomes a brutal contest of ambition, violence, and power. Duke Shelby, played by Jamie Bell (All of Us Strangers, Turn: Washington’s Spies), and Charles Shelby, played by Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things, The New Mutants), find themselves in a Birmingham filled with both unprecedented opportunity and deadly jeopardy.
At the blood-soaked heart of the city are Duke Shelby’s Peaky Blinders, with Samuel Bottomley (California Schemin’) playing Eliot, Arturo Muselli (Gomorrah) as Angelo, Eugene Collins (The Bay) as Frank, and Lucie Shorthouse (We Are Lady Parts) as Kezia Lee.
Also joining the cast is Conleth Hill (Game of Thrones) as Clemmy Keeler, the fierce patriarch of the Keeler gangster family, who rival the Peaky Blinders’ ambitions to rebuild Birmingham. Cal O’Driscoll (Video Nasty) plays Clemmy’s son, Aidan Keeler, while Daniel Monks (All Her Fault) joins as Detective Inspector Bell.
There are also some familiar faces returning to the world of ‘Peaky Blinders’, with Ned Dennehy reprising his role as Charlie Strong, and Packy Lee returning as Johnny Dogs. Both characters also appear in the upcoming film ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’.
The newly announced cast join Jessica Brown Findlay (Silo, The Flatshare), Lashana Lynch (The Day of The Jackal, No Time to Die), and Lucy Karczewski (Stereophonic), who had already been confirmed for the series. Details of their roles are still being kept under wraps for now.
‘Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Knight returns as writer for the new series, with Mike Barker and Anna Zackrisson directing. Tim Whitby serves as producer. The drama is produced by Banijay UK companies Kudos and Garrison Drama for the BBC in the UK, and Netflix for the rest of the world.
Production is supported by the West Midlands Combined Authority, with ‘Peaky Blinders’ marking the first commission following the BBC’s new partnership agreement with the WMCA and Create Central to expand BBC and partner production investment in the West Midlands.
Since launching on BBC Two back in 2013, ‘Peaky Blinders’ has grown from a stylish Birmingham crime drama into a global phenomenon, picking up a devoted fanbase around the world and numerous awards, including the 2018 BAFTA for Best Drama Series.
The sequel consists of two new seasons, each running for six episodes.
‘Peaky Blinders‘ does not yet have a premiere date but will air on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK, and on Netflix across the rest of the world.
