‘Young Sherlock’ Season 2 Adds Olivia Williams, Indira Varma, Sophie Skelton & Aidan Gillen

by Dave Elliott

Prime Video has added four formidable new names to the cast of Young Sherlock Season 2, with Olivia Williams (The Father, Dune: Prophecy), Indira Varma (The Night Manager, Dune: Prophecy), Sophie Skelton (Outlander) and Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones, Kin) joining as series regulars.

Production is now underway on the second season, with Hero Fiennes Tiffin (The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare) returning as the young Sherlock Holmes. Guy Ritchie is also back as an executive producer and will direct the opening episode.

Prime Video has released a start-of-production video featuring Ritchie, Fiennes Tiffin and returning cast member Dónal Finn (The Wheel of Time), although details about the new characters and the mystery awaiting Sherlock are being kept firmly under lock and key.

The series charts the formative years of Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary detective, following a younger and considerably less polished Sherlock as he develops the skills that will eventually make him the world’s greatest detective. The first season blended mystery, action and Ritchie’s trademark swagger while exploring Sherlock’s early relationships and complicated family history.

The new additions bring plenty of genre pedigree with them. Williams recently starred as Tula Harkonnen in Dune: Prophecy, while Varma’s extensive television career includes Game of Thrones, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Doctor Who and The Capture. Skelton spent a decade playing Brianna Randall Fraser in Outlander, while Gillen is known for roles in The Wire, Game of Thrones, Kin and Mayor of Kingstown.

Also returning for Season 2 are Natascha McElhone (Halo), Holly Cattle (Cobra, Rivals) and Max Irons (Condor), alongside Finn.

According to Prime Video, the first season reached 45 million viewers during its first 28 days and ranks among the platform’s ten biggest original seasons to date. The streamer also says the series reached number one in more than 95 countries, with particularly strong performances in the UK, India and Germany.

The series was created for television by showrunner Matthew Parkhill, who executive produces alongside Guy Ritchie, Marc Resteghini, Dhana Rivera Gilbert, Simon Maxwell, Ivan Atkinson, Simon Kelton, Colin Wilson and Harriet Creelman. Steve Thompson and James Dormer serve as co-executive producers, with Motive Pictures leading physical production.

All eight episodes of the first season are available to stream now on Prime Video.
