As if there was ever any doubt Cher Horowitz would eventually make her way back to Beverly Hills. Paramount+ has officially ordered a limited sequel series to ‘Clueless’, with Alicia Silverstone (The Crush, Batman & Robin) reprising her iconic role from the classic 1995 film.
The sequel picks up around 30 years after the original movie. Cher has apparently figured out quite a lot since we last saw her, building a successful career and mastering motherhood. However, when her daughter reaches high school, Cher discovers that parenting a teenager is enough to make her feel “clueless” all over again.
The series is expected to begin filming in Los Angeles in 2027 and marks something of a homecoming for the franchise. Paramount released the original movie, while CBS Studios holds the television rights.
The Paramount+ order also brings an end to a surprisingly long journey to get another ‘Clueless’ television series onto screens.
CBS Studios has spent around seven years developing various potential revivals. An earlier version, announced in 2020, would have focused on Dionne Davenport, the character played by Stacey Dash (Single Ladies, Mo’ Money) in the film. That project was developed for Peacock but did not move forward.
The studio later started again with a new concept featuring Silverstone’s Cher. That version landed at Peacock for development in 2025, but the streamer passed on the project around a year later. Paramount+ had reportedly been following its progress and stepped in after it became available.
The limited series is being written by Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage and Jordan Weiss. Schwartz and Savage previously created teen dramas including The O.C. and Gossip Girl, while Weiss’ credits include Dollface and Freakier Friday.
Silverstone will also executive produce alongside Schwartz, Savage and Weiss. Original ‘Clueless’ writer and director Amy Heckerling and original film producer Robert Lawrence are also returning as executive producers.

We’re especially proud to be filming this much-anticipated series in Los Angeles, honoring its starring role in the original film while investing in the city’s exceptional talent and crews.”
The original film, which was loosely inspired by Jane Austen’s Emma, followed wealthy and endlessly optimistic Beverly Hills teenager Cher as she attempted to improve the lives and relationships of everyone around her. Alongside Silverstone, it starred Stacey Dash (Single Ladies), Brittany Murphy (8 Mile, Sin City) and Paul Rudd (Ant-Man, Only Murders in the Building).
This will not be the franchise’s first trip to television. Heckerling previously created a sitcom adaptation of ‘Clueless’, which launched in 1996 and ran for three seasons across ABC and UPN. Rachel Blanchard (Fargo, You Me Her) took over the role of Cher, while Dash returned as Dionne.
The movie celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2025 with a special 35mm screening at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, which reunited members of the original cast with Heckerling. It was also recently selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
No other returning cast members have been announced, so we do not yet know whether Cher’s old friends, family or stepbrother Josh will appear. However, after three decades away, seeing Silverstone step back into Cher’s impeccably coordinated wardrobe is already enough to make this revival sound considerably less clueless than most.
