‘He Had It Coming’: Lydia West Campus Murder Mystery Acquired By BBC

by Dave Elliott

A feminist art protest goes spectacularly wrong in He Had It Coming, an Australian comedy-drama and murder mystery which has been acquired by the BBC for BBC iPlayer and BBC Three this August.

The eight-part series stars Lydia West (Big Mood, It’s a Sin), Natasha Liu Bordizzo (Ahsoka, The Voyeurs) and Liv Hewson (Yellowjackets, Bombshell). It follows two women who accidentally become entangled in a murder investigation after their spontaneous political artwork is co-opted by a killer.

West plays Elise, an awkward British scholarship student who forms an unlikely alliance with fashion influencer Barbara, played by Liu Bordizzo. After a string of infuriating encounters with men, the pair decide it is time to make a statement.

Barbara spearheads a late-night activist art project, and, while drunk, the women deface a statue of their university’s male founder in the campus quadrangle. Unfortunately, when they wake the following morning, they discover that the university’s star athlete has been murdered and displayed at the foot of their political statement.

With the evidence seemingly pointing in their direction, Elise and Barbara must erase their connections to the scene while attempting to uncover the identity of the real killer. That becomes increasingly difficult as Detective Shepherd, played by Hewson, begins following the trail of clues they have desperately tried to sweep away.

As gender tensions rise across the campus and the body count continues to grow, the pair find themselves caught inside an increasingly dangerous and extremely messy whodunnit.

The university athlete is played by Cody Simpson (Cougar Town, Smiley Face Killers), who makes a special appearance in the series.

“He Had it Coming is a fun, pacey campus whodunnit with a vibrant poke into gender politics. It’s deliciously dark, comic and has a very bingeable vibe,” commented Nick Lee, Head of BBC Programme Acquisition.

‘He Had It Coming’ was created and written by Gretel Vella (Totally Completely Fine, The Great) and Craig Anderson (Double The Fist). The writing team also includes Emme Hoy (Renegade Nell), Belinda King (Wellmania), Nick Coyle (Bump) and Hannah Samuel (The Heights).

Rachel House (Mountain) and Anne Renton (The Good Doctor, The Bold Type) direct the series, which is produced by Jungle Entertainment for Australian streaming service Stan. FIFTH SEASON handles global distribution.

Executive producers include Gretel Vella, Lydia West, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Chloe Rickard, Shay Spencer, Bridget Callow-Wright, Robert Taylor, Ellie Gibbons, Cailah Scobie and Alicia Brown.

He Had It Coming’ premieres Saturday, 8th August 2026 on BBC iPlayer, and begins Friday, 15th August 2026 at 11.15pm on BBC Three.
