AMC and Canal+ are heading back to the beach, as the broadcasters have officially greenlit ‘Point Break‘, a new eight-part TV series set more than 30 years after the events of Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 action classic.
The project had been in development at AMC since last year, but is now moving ahead to production in early 2027. AMC and AMC+ will air the series in the US, while Canal+ will carry it in France and across its pay-TV footprint in Europe, Africa and Asia. Studiocanal will handle global distribution, although no specific UK broadcaster or streaming home has been announced.
Set in the present day, ‘Point Break’ follows a new heist crew with ties to the infamous Ex-Presidents gang. As the FBI investigates, it is forced to rely on a mysterious former pro surfer with a chequered past to infiltrate the group.
The original 1991 film starred Keanu Reeves (John Wick) as rookie FBI agent Johnny Utah, who goes undercover with a gang of Southern California surfers led by Patrick Swayze (Dirty Dancing) as the charismatic Bodhi. The crew robs banks wearing masks of former US presidents, while Utah becomes increasingly drawn into their adrenaline-fuelled world.
There was, unfortunately, also a 2015 remake of ‘Point Break’, starring Luke Bracey (Elvis) and Édgar Ramírez (The Assassination of Gianni Versace). It ditched much of what made the original work in favour of a glossy, globe-trotting tour of extreme sports, spectacular scenery and remarkably little of the charm that made people care about ‘Point Break’ in the first place. It came, it went, and has since been filed in that special corner of Hollywood history reserved for remakes everyone collectively pretends never happened. Frankly, we’re happy to respect that arrangement.
The new series comes from Alcon Television Group, the TV arm of Alcon Entertainment, which was behind the original movie. Dave Kalstein, whose credits include Butterfly, Treadstone and NCIS: Los Angeles, and Christopher C. Rogers, who has worked on Sugar and Halt and Catch Fire, will serve as co-showrunners.
“Start with one of the most entertaining and unforgettable action films ever made, add a powerhouse creative team and producing partners, massive fan interest that has been clear from the moment we announced the series was in development and you get a greenlight we could not be more excited about,” said Dan McDermott, chief content officer of AMC Global Media and president of AMC Studios. “Dave Kalstein and Chris Rogers have created a story and characters that honor the legacy of the film and will bring a new generation of Ex-Presidents to the world.”
Kalstein and Rogers will also executive produce alongside Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, Alcon Television Group head of television Ben Roberts and Julia Cohen, along with Studiocanal’s M-K Kennedy, Paul Gilbert and Daniel Gratton.
‘Point Break‘ is due to begin production in early 2027, with no premiere date announced yet.
