Netflix has released the official trailer for ‘The Diplomat‘ Season 4, and the Penn administration appears to have decided that ordinary political brinkmanship simply is not exciting enough. The award-winning drama returns this October, with the fragile peace between the US and UK under threat, Russia’s most powerful weapon in play, and two marriages looking increasingly capable of exploding alongside the international order.
Following the Season 3 cliffhanger, President Grace Penn and Vice President Hal Wyler have entered into a conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon, a move which could hurtle the United States towards war. Unfortunately for them, Ambassador Kate Wyler has found out what they have been doing, and she has some fairly serious concerns about the new administration’s approach to risk.
Kate, played by Keri Russell (The Americans), confronts President Penn, played by Allison Janney (The West Wing), in the trailer.
“Your tolerance for risk to human life seems higher than it was,” Kate tells her.
Things are not looking much calmer behind the scenes either. White House Chief of Staff Billie Appiah, played by Nana Mensah (The Chair), is equally unmoved by Kate’s alarm.
“You made a covert military incursion into an allies’ territory,” warns Kate. “It’s over the line.”
“The line moves,” Appiah replies, which is probably not the response you want to hear when potentially catastrophic geopolitical consequences are involved.
While Kate tries to stop the situation from spiralling further, her husband Hal, played by Rufus Sewell (The Man in the High Castle), is now Vice President and increasingly aligned with Grace. That leaves Kate forming an uneasy partnership with First Gentleman Todd Penn, played by Bradley Whitford (The West Wing), as they attempt to prevent the Grace-Hal alliance from upending the balance of power both at home and abroad.
“This season is built on the foursome that is Kate, Hal, Grace, and Todd,” says creator, showrunner and executive producer Debora Cahn. “They’re two couples strapped together in one car on a crumbling roller coaster. Each of them has a professional, public role that’s upending their ability to function as a married person. And there’s a change-partners thing that happens, where the growing bond between Grace and Hal creates a not-so-functional alliance between Kate and Todd.”
Cahn is not exactly promising a relaxing eight episodes either.
“There’s plenty to worry about,” she says. “It can be pretty chilling when you see who takes power and get the sense that they may be horrifically misusing it.”
Season 4 consists of eight hour-long episodes. Alongside them, the cast also includes Ato Essandoh (Away), Ali Ahn (Agatha All Along) and Rory Kinnear (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power). Janice Williams, Alex Graves, Keri Russell, Peter Noah and Eli Attie executive produce alongside Cahn.
