Rafe Spall Cast As Arthur Weasley In HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Season 2, Alongside Moaning Myrtle & Colin Creevey

by Dave Elliott

HBO has added three more familiar names from the Wizarding World to Season 2 of Harry Potter, casting Rafe Spall (Trying, The English) as Arthur Weasley, Molly Hewitt-Richards (Code of Silence, Casualty) as Moaning Myrtle, and Jasper Ambrose (The Sheep Detectives, Man vs Baby) as Colin Creevey.

The new arrivals are all characters introduced in the second book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, as HBO continues putting the pieces in place for the second season before the first has even premiered. Clearly, nobody at Hogwarts is hanging around waiting for the Sorting Hat to finish.

Spall takes on the role of Arthur Weasley, patriarch of the sprawling Weasley clan, husband to Molly and father to Ron, Ginny, Fred, George, Percy, Charlie and Bill. He will appear alongside Katherine Parkinson (The IT Crowd, Here We Go) as Molly Weasley.

There is also a nice bit of Wizarding World family history with that casting. Rafe is the son of Timothy Spall (Mr Turner, The Sixth Commandment), who played Peter Pettigrew, aka Wormtail, in the original Harry Potter films. So, apparently, appearing somewhere in the Potter universe may now be a Spall family tradition.

Hewitt-Richards will play Moaning Myrtle, the permanently miserable Hogwarts ghost who haunts the girls’ bathroom and becomes rather important to the mystery surrounding the Chamber of Secrets. Ambrose takes the role of Colin Creevey, the enthusiastic young Gryffindor who arrives at Hogwarts armed with a camera and very quickly becomes one of Harry’s biggest fans.

The trio join a rapidly growing Season 2 cast which already includes Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) as Gilderoy Lockhart, Bonnie Hill (The Six Triple Eight) as Ginny Weasley, Lenny Rush (Am I Being Unreasonable?) as Dobby, and Billy Barratt (Invasion, Bring Her Back) as Tom Riddle. Hill takes over the role of Ginny from Gracie Cochrane, who appears as the character in Season 1.

The first season of ‘Harry Potter’ introduces Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, alongside John Lithgow (Dexter, The Crown) as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer (Ozark, The White Queen) as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You, The Lazarus Project) as Severus Snape and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Into the Badlands) as Rubeus Hagrid.

The series is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, with Mark Mylod executive producing and directing multiple episodes. J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts and David Heyman also executive produce, with the series made for HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television.

Harry Potter‘ Season 1 premieres Friday, 25th December 2026 on HBO Max in the UK.
