Hayley Atwell’s Conviction Fails To Get Full Season Order…

ABC have announced that Hayley Atwell’s show Conviction has failed to pick up a full season. Whilst this is not a cancellation, it bodes very very badly for the show’s future.

ABC have stated that all 13 episodes of it’s original order will air, although it’s possible they may be shoved into a less lucrative air time to run them off. On the plus side, they have also say they are retaining the right to order a second season, and have not released the cast from their contracts. Having said that, it is incredibly rare, and practically unheard of, for a show in it’s first season which does not get a it’s ‘back 9’ episodes, to get land a second season.

Conviction replaced Castle in ABC’s schedules, after that show was brought to a, somewhat controversial, end. It’s ratings have been pretty dire from the start, which is why it is currently listed as on ‘Life Support’ in our Renewal/Cancellation Listings.

For those that have yet to catch the show, Conviction stars Hayley Atwell as a lawyer, and the wayward daughter of the former President. After getting busted for cocaine possession, she is ‘blackmailed’ by NYC District Attorney Conner Wallace (Eddie Cahill) into heading up the newly formed ‘Conviction Integrity Unit’ – a group who a re-examine cases where there is a suspicion of wrongful conviction.

It’s been said a number of times that Hayley Atwell is a star who’s yet to find the right vehicle. Many would argue that vehicle was Agent Carter, but that unfortunately the US audience didn’t agree, and that also underperformed for the network. Whether the cancellation of Conviction would convince ABC to give Agent Carter another shot, either as a limited series or a tv movie seems unlikely, but we can dream…

Conviction is currently airing on Sky Living on Wednesday nights at 9pm in the UK.
