Disney Have A New Herbie TV Series In The Works

This little bit of news popped up over the weekend. ‘Herbie’ the sentient anthropomorphic VW Beetle, could be making a return, this time to the small screen, as Disney has plans for a new tv series!

For those unfamiliar with this Disney property, ‘Herbie’ is a racing car, quite literally, with a mind of his own. He first appeared in the 1968 movie ‘The Love Bug’, but has had movies in nearly every decade since then, ending with the 2005 movie ‘Herbie: Fully Loaded’ starring Lindsay Lohan.

They reportedly haven’t settled on whether the new lead (other than Herbie of course!) will be male or female. They are looking to cast a character called Lili or Landon Reed, who will be the human component to the story. Usually ‘Herbie’ is inherited from his previous owner, however, the reports this time around seem to be making it somewhat of a reboot.

Lili/Landon is described as “part scientist, part entrepreneur, part daredevil”. When her (or his) parents go missing, he/she discovers that they’ve beensecretly working on a government project… a talking car named ‘Herbie’. Why the parents would decide to do this with an old VW Beetle, is a question I hope they answer pretty early! The kid and ‘Herbie’ team up to find their parents, but also have to deal with a bunch of criminals who want the state-of-the-art technology for themselves.

Travis Braun (Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, Turbo FAST) is apparently writing the script and will serve as exec producer along with alongside Tom Burkhard and Matt Dearborn (Zeke and Luther, Even Stevens) from Disney.

The new show would mark the second time they’ve tried a weekly tv series for ‘Herbie’. The first tv outing in 1982 only lasted 5 episodes, so let’s hope this one does better!
