Netflix’s upcoming series based on ‘The Witcher‘ novels and video games has found it’s Geralt of Rivia, and it will be Superman himself, Henry Cavill.
Based on the best-selling fantasy series, ‘The Witcher’ is an epic tale of fate and family. Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.
Cavill has most recently been starring in the box office hit ‘Mission Impossible – Fallout’ which has earned over £500 million worldwide, but is probably best known for his role as ‘Clark Kent / Superman,’ in the DCU movies ‘Man of Steel’, ‘Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice’ and ‘Justice League’. His previous tv work includes the Golden Globe-nominated series ‘The Tudors’ where he played Charles Brandon. He is apparently a massive fan of Andrzej Sapkowski’s series of fantasy short stories and novels about the Witcher, Geralt of Rivia.
Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (Marvel’s ‘Daredevil’, ‘The Defenders’, and the upcoming ‘Umbrella Academy’) will serve as showrunner for the 8-episode series, and exec produce along with Alik Sakharov (‘House of Cards’, ‘Game of Thrones’) who will direct 4 episodes, including the premiere. Other directors on board include Alex Garcia Lopez (Marvel’s ‘Luke Cage’, ‘Utopia’) and Charlotte Brändström (‘Outlander’, ‘Counterpart’, ‘Disparue’) who will take 2 episodes each.
Now we just need to hope the filming of ‘The Witcher’ doesn’t clash with any DCU pick-up shoots, because CGI-ing out an entire white beard is not going to be easy!
Netflix hasn’t yet set a premiere date for ‘The Witcher‘ Season 1, but given they are only starting to cast now, it’s not likely to land until 2020.
