‘The Crown’ Renewed For 5th & Final Season With Imelda Staunton As Queen

We may only be in Season 3 of The Crown, but Netflix has announced it has renewed the royal drama for a 5th & final season, along with revealing Imelda Staunton will take over as Queen Elizabeth II.

‘The Crown’ tells the inside story of two of the most famous addresses in the world – Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street – and the intrigues, love lives and machinations behind the great events that shaped the second half of the 20th century. Season 3, which recently launched on the streaming service saw Olivia Colman take over the role of Queen, as she faces a rapidly changing Britain, whilst her family continues to struggle against the needs of the monarchy and the wants of their fracturing personal lives.

Colman, like her predecessor Claire Foy, is set to stay in place for two seasons, taking her up to Season 4 of the drama. Staunton will get a shorter run, taking over for a single final 5th Season. Whilst we know the rest of the cast will also change, the only person we know that has been announced for future seasons so far is Gillian Anderson, who will appear in Season 4 playing former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to confirm Imelda Staunton as Her Majesty The Queen for the fifth and final season, taking The Crown into the 21st century,” commented creator Peter Morgan. “Imelda is an astonishing talent and will be a fantastic successor to Claire Foy and Olivia Colman.”

If you’ve been following ‘The Crown’ from when it was first revealed, you might be a little confused, as it was initially announced that the show would run for 6 seasons. It appears it was Morgan, not Netflix, who changed his mind about the length of the drama. “At the outset, I had imagined The Crown running for six seasons but now that we have begun work on the stories for season five it has become clear to me that this is the perfect time and place to stop,” he adds. “I’m grateful to Netflix and Sony for supporting me in this decision.”

The current 3rd Season spans the 70s era of UK politics which saw Harold Wilson become Prime Minister twice, with Edward Heath taking office in the middle. This era also includes Princess Margaret’s divorce, the 1972 miners’ strike, the assassination of Lord Mountbatten, and the initial appearance of a young Diana Spencer who first met Prince Charles in 1977. As Morgan comments above, the 5th Season will take us into the 21st century, but it is unclear at the moment at what point he will stop. Season 4 should take us through the 80s and possibly early 90s, with the and final season concluding at some point in the 2000s. Whether that means they will end at the millennium, or maybe go as far as the Diamond Jubilee in 2012, we will have to wait and see.

“The first three seasons of The Crown defined an era, and I know the upcoming fourth season will build further on that success,” comments Cindy Holland, VP, Original Content, Netflix. “It’s a stunning example of award-winning entertainment, created in the UK and loved by millions of fans around the world. I fully support Peter Morgan’s creative decision and am excited to see how he, Imelda Staunton and the cast and crew of Season 5, bring this landmark series to a fitting and spectacular end.”

The Crown‘ Seasons 1 to 3 are available to stream on Netflix right now.
