Amazon Developing Live-Action Series Adaptation Of The ‘Promised Neverland’ Manga Series

Up until now, it’s been Netflix who have been throwing their power behind live-action adaptations of Japanese titles. Now Amazon is looking to fight back, and have put into development a live-action version of ‘Promised Neverland’.

‘Promised Neverland’ follows the story of the children of Grace Field House orphanage. Emma, Norman and Ray are the brightest kids at the orphanage, and under the care of the woman they refer to as “Mom,” they have enjoyed a comfortable life. Good food, clean clothes and the perfect environment to learn. While the daily studying and exams they have to take are tough, their loving caretaker provides them with delicious foods and plenty of playtime – what more could an orphan ask for? But perhaps not everything is as it seems…

When Emma and Norman decide to break that says they are never to leave the orphanage grounds, they uncover the dark truth of the outside world they have been forbidden from seeing. And now that truth is discovered, they must begin to plan an escape to save all of the children.

Since it’s launch in 2016, the original Japanese manga series, written by Kaiu Shirai and illustrated by Posuka Demizu, has sold over 20 million copies and is still running today. There was also an anime television series developed by CloverWorks which aired in 2019.

This new live-action version is being developed by ‘Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse’ writer and director Rodney Rothman, who will direct the series, Vertigo Entertainment, and Masi Oka, who you will probably know either as Hiro Nakamura in ‘Heroes’ or Max from ‘Hawaii Five-0’. If you’re thinking Masi Oka is a random name to pop up here, he also produced the 2017 ‘Death Note’ film for Netflix, so has some form with these sort of projects. He also has a number of other adaptations of manga titles in the works including film versions of ‘Mega Man’ and ‘Attack on Titan’. (Side note – when Masi Oka first got the gig as Hiro, he was working as a visual effects artist for ILM, and has credits on all three ‘Star Wars’ prequels.) Meghan Malloy, who has been working as writer’s assistant to Rothman, is set to write the script.

‘Promised Neverland’ is currently only in development, so it is possible it might not make it to series, but we’ll let you know if we hear more.
