Geektown Awards – Best Game & Movie Of The Year

We come to the point in proceedings when we step away from tv for a moment and move to the games and films which have been keeping us entertained over the past 12 months. Whether it’s defending the galaxy or driving around South America. Battling your evil father, or taking on one final spy mission, there was something for everyone. Here are your choices for the best games and films of 2021.

Geektown’s Movie of The Year

Nominees: A Quiet Place Part II, Army of the Dead, Army of Thieves, Black Widow, Bo Burnham: Inside, Dune, Free Guy, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Jungle Cruise, Luca, No Time To Die, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, The Eternals, The Last Duel, The Suicide Squad, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Zack Snyder’s Justice League

Bronze: Dune

Silver: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

And the Gold goes to …

Winner: No Time To Die

It has been an… interesting… year for film, as cinemas and production companies deal with restrictions from the ongoing pandemic. However, things lifted enough for Daniel Craig’s final outing as legendary spy, James Bond, to be released on the big screen in ‘No Time To Die’.

In ‘No Time To Die’, Bond has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica. His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help. The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.

The film was originally due to be released in November 2019, but that was moved back to February 2020 when original director, Danny Boyle, left the project. With Cary Joji Fukunaga stepping in as a replacement fairly swiftly, normally, moving a release by a few months wouldn’t be a huge issue, but the global pandemic had other ideas… After multiple delays, the film finally landed in September 2021 to rave reviews, pulling in an impress $774 million at the box office worldwide.

Geektown’s Game of The Year

Nominees: Deathloop, Forza Horizon 5, Hitman 3, It Takes Two, Life is Strange: True Colors, Little Nightmares 2, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Metroid Dread, Oddworld Soulstorm, Psychonauts 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Subnautica: Below Zero

Bronze: Hitman 3

Silver: Forza Horizon 5

And the Gold goes to …

Winner: Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

‘Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy’ are, of course, a familiar group to many, thanks to the MCU, however, much like the other Marvel video games, this version sits in its own Marvel gameverse. Twelve years ago, a massive Galactic War swept across the cosmos. Star-Lord, seeing opportunity for adventure and profit in a universe that’s finally moving on, recently formed the Guardians of the Galaxy to sell their services as heroes-for-hire. But now, a grand organization known as the Universal Church of Truth promises to bring back everything that was lost in the Galactic War. Powered by their faith, they’re spreading their beliefs to more and more worlds. It’ll soon be up to the Guardians to save the galaxy. No guts, no glory.

Whilst the gameplay itself is maybe not that original, it does have a well-acted and entertaining story to give the player hours of enjoyment. The action is fun, with some wonderfully goofy humour, and the exchanges between the crew can be hilarious. It was the 2nd best-selling boxed game in the UK, behind the juggernaut of ‘FIFA 2022’, so it seems likely we may see a sequel at some point in the future.
