Amazon’s IMDb TV Rebrands As Amazon Freevee

Amazon’s IMDb TV is getting a new name the media giant has announced. From 27th April 2022, the free ad-supported streaming service will be known as Amazon Freevee.

For those of you thinking “what’s changing to what now?”, IMDb TV, which launched in September 2021 in the UK, first launched in the USA back in 2019, although was originally called IMDb Freedive… That lasted a few months before someone pointed out having “dive” in the name has more connection with “dive bar” or “this place is a dive” than “diving through content”, so was changed a few months later to IMDb TV. The only issue with that is it removed the key point that the service is completely free, supported by ads, so they’re hoping this latest rebrand to “Freevee” places that fact back in the forefront of people’s minds. After last year’s successful UK launch, the service will expand into Germany later in 2022.

“Over the past two years, we have seen tremendous growth for our AVOD service and are committed to bringing our audiences premium, free-to-consumer content,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios. “We’re looking forward to building on this momentum with an increasing slate of inventive and broadly appealing Originals and are excited to establish Amazon Freevee as the premier AVOD service with content audiences crave.”

IMDb TV (or Freevee as it will be soon) has been building up a nice collection of Original content over the last few years including Leverage: Redemption, Alex Rider, Almost Paradise and Bosch: Legacy’, alongside ‘Judy Justice’, ‘Luke Bryan: My Dirt Road Diary’, ‘Moment of Truth’, The Center Seat: 55 Years of Star Trek’, and ‘Top Class: The Life and Times of the Sierra Canyon Trailblazers’. On top of the originals, they also have a huge array of tv show boxsets including ‘The West Wing’, ‘The Closer’, ‘Royal Pains’, ‘Mythbusters’, and ‘Comic Book Men’, along with films such as ‘The Danish Girl’, ‘Donnie Darko’, ‘Frost/Nixon’, ‘Nowhere Boy’, and a host of other tv shows and movies, all completely for free.

Additionally, the free streaming service will add exclusive Original movies to its already robust slate, starting with a greenlight order for the workplace rom-com Love Accidentally, starring Brenda Song and Aaron O’Connell. In Love Accidentally, Alexa (Song) and Jason (O’Connell) are competing for a promotion at their advertising firm when each of their significant others breaks up with them. Thinking she has texted a friend, Alexa mistakenly sends Jason a broken-hearted message. The two spark up an anonymous relationship via text with neither aware of who the other really is. When the truth comes out, will they be able to put their rivalry aside and let true love prevail? Love Accidentally also features Denise Richards and Maxwell Caulfield, while Barry Barnholtz, Zelma Kiwi and Jeffrey Schenck serve as executive producers.

On the tv show side, Amazon’s free streaming service has previously announced greenlight orders for Primo, the coming-of-age comedy from Michael Schur (‘The Good Place’, ‘Parks & Rec’) and Shea Serrano, and ‘On Call’, the half-hour procedural drama from prolific TV producer Dick Wolf.

“Customers are increasingly shifting to streaming ad-supported premium content, and we have developed Amazon Freevee to deliver them highly sought content with limited ads,” adds Ashraf Alkarmi, director of Amazon Freevee. “Our new name clearly communicates who we are: An easy-to-navigate streaming service, available to users for free, whenever and wherever they choose to watch some of the greatest Original and licensed content available.”

IMDb TV is available within the Prime Video app across hundreds of devices. Customers can access IMDb TV content through the “IMDb TV – Popular Movies and TV – Free with Ads” carousel within Prime Video. In the coming weeks, the free streaming service will also be available as a standalone app on Fire TV. You do not need an Amazon Prime subscription. You just need a free Amazon account to access the service.
