by Dave Elliott

The Witcher is back for Season 3 this June on Netflix, and the streaming service has released the first trailer which sees Henry Cavill return as Geralt for the last time before Liam Hemsworth takes over the role in Season 4.

Based on the best-selling fantasy series of books, ‘The Witcher’ is an epic tale of fate and family. The story of the intertwined destinies of three individuals in the vast world of The Continent, where humans, elves, witchers, gnomes, and monsters battle to survive and thrive, and where good and evil is not easily identified.

The third season sees monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture Ciri of Cintra. Geralt takes her into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusting with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers… Instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line – or risk losing each other forever.

The cast includes Henry Cavill as Geralt, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, Freya Allan as Ciri, Joey Batey as Jaskier, MyAnna Buring as Tissaia, Tom Canton as Filavandrel, Jeremy Crawford as Yarpen Zigrin, Eamon Farren as Cahir, Mahesh Jadu as Vilgefortz, Terence Maynard as Artorius, Lars Mikkelsen as Stregobor, Mimi Ndiweni as Fringilla, Royce Pierreson as Istredd, Wilson Mbomio as Dara, Anna Shaffer as Triss, Therica Wilson-Read as Sabrina, Cassie Clare as Philippa Eilhart, Mecia Simson as Francesca Findabair, Graham McTavish as Sigismund Dijkstra, Bart Edwards as Duny, Simon Callow as Codringher, Liz Carr as Fenn, Ed Birch as Vizimir, and Kaine Zajaz as Gage.

It was announced in October last year that Cavill would be stepping down from the role of Geralt, as he heads over to streaming rival Amazon to produce and star in a new Warhammer 40K Cinematic Universe project. Liam Hemsworth (‘The Hunger Games’, ‘Most Dangerous Game’) steps in as Geralt from Season 4.

Lauren Schmidt Hissrich returns as showrunner/exec producer. Tomek Baginski, Jason F. Brown, Sean Daniel, Mike Ostrowski, Steve Gaub and Jaroslaw Sawko also exec produce. The series will be directed by Stephen Surjik, Gandja Monteiro, Loni Peristere and Bola Ogun. Based on the novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, the episodic scriptwriters are Mike Ostrowski, Tania Lotia, Haily Hall, Rae Benjamin, Clare Higgins, Javier Grillo-Marxuach, Matthew D’Ambrosio and Troy Dangerfield.

The Witcher‘ Season 3 will be split into two parts. Volume 1 premieres Thursday, 29th June 2023 (episodes 1-5), with Volume 2 landing Thursday, 27th July 2023 (episodes 6-8) on Netflix UK and worldwide.
