Netflix has released the first little teaser for the return of the wonderfully fun ‘Outer Banks‘, along with announcing Season 4 will be split in half, with Part 1 airing in October, followed by Part 2 in November.
‘Outer Banks’ is a coming-of-age story that follows a tight-knit group of local teens (the “Pogues”) in the beach vacation destination of the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The first three seasons saw John B (Chase Stokes), Sarah (Madelyn Cline), Kiara (Madison Bailey), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), and JJ (Rudy Pankow) on a high-stakes hunt to locate the legendary “El Dorado gold”, whilst also trying to determine the fate of John B’s missing father who had a connection to the treasure.
Season 4 marks something of a new chapter for the Pogues. As John B says in the trailer, “We found the gold. That’s where the story should have ended. But really, it was just the beginning…” If you remember the finale of Season 3 (SPOILERS), they found the “El Dorado gold”, although they were still coming to terms with the deaths of Ward (Charles Esten) and Big John (Charles Halford). The drama ended with an 18-month time-jump where Wes Genrette (David Jensen – ‘Queen Sugar’) approached the Pogues with a proposal to find Blackbeard’s treasure. However, Season 4 begins with a bit of a rewind through those 18 months leading up to that meeting…
After finding the gold at El Dorado, the Pogues returned to the OBX and were committed to having a “normal” life. They’ve built themselves a new safe haven, officially dubbed “Poguelandia 2.0,” where they live together and run a fairly successful bait, tackle, and charter tour shop. So why does John B comment “We have everything to lose” in the clip?
It seems, their fledgeling new business suffers some financial setbacks over those 18 months, so when Wes approaches John B, Sarah, Kiara, JJ, Pope, and Cleo about Blackbeard’s treasure, they take him up on his offer. But before they know it, they’re well in over their heads, with dangerous new enemies hot on their heels, racing them to the treasure. Meanwhile, their problems are only growing, and they’re forced to question their past, present, and future — who they really are, has it all been worth it, and how much are they willing to risk?
Returning series regulars for Season 4 include Stokes as John B, Cline as Sarah, Bailey as Kiara, Daviss as Pope, Pankow as JJ, and Carlacia Grant as Cleo, alongside Austin North as Topper, and Drew Starkey as Rafe. In addition, Fiona Palomo is also set to return as Sofia and has been upped to series regular.
The new cast this year includes J. Anthony Crane (Dead Ringers, Billions) as Chandler Groff. Darkly grief-stricken over the loss of his wife, he is welcoming to the Pogues on their latest adventure; Pollyanna McIntosh (The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, Double Blind) as Dalia, a revolutionary-like leader and worldly baddie on a plunder who comes face-to-face with the Pogues; Brianna Brown (Dynasty, Eastsiders) as Hollis Robinson. The biggest realtor on the island who previously worked with Ward in a successful business deal, she now has her eye on Rafe for a new venture; Rigo Sanchez (Animal Kingdom, Station 19) as Lightner, an imposing stranger with a piratical nerve. This dangerous and calculating outdoorsman appears to test the Pogues; And Mia Challis (FBI: International, Clickbait) plays Ruthie, a wild child with a toxic streak who develops a close relationship with Topper.
The drama has been a massive hit for Netflix around the world, regularly taking the #1 spot globally in Netflix’s Top 10 TV (English) list, and leading Nielsen’s U.S. streaming chart following a new season launch. The series is created by Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke, who all return as showrunners and executive producers for Season 4.
If you’ve not watched the previous seasons, it really is a fun bit of escapist teen drama… Somewhat ‘The Goonies’ meets ‘Ozark’ meets ‘Dawson’s Creek’, which sounds like it shouldn’t work, but it really does! If you want to know more about the show, we have interviewed both Production Designer Daniel Novotny & Cinematographer Brad Smith, along with the series composer Fil Eisler, who give some really interesting insights into what goes into making the drama.
‘Outer Banks‘ Season 4, Part 1, premieres Thursday, 10th October 2024 on Netflix UK and worldwide, with Part 2 following on Thursday, 7th November 2024.
