‘The Last Of Us‘ will be back for at least one more season as HBO announces they have renewed the drama for Season 3, before Season 2 is set to premiere later this month.
Based on the popular video game series, season one of ‘The Last of Us’ takes place 20 years after modern civilization’s destruction. Joel (Pedro Pascal – ‘The Mandalorian’), a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie (Bella Ramsey – ‘Game Of Thrones’), a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal and heartbreaking journey as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.
The second season moves things on five years, and Joel and Ellie are drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.
“We approached Season 2 with the goal of creating something we could be proud of,” said series co-creator, executive producer, writer and director Craig Mazin“The end results have exceeded even our most ambitious goals, thanks to our continued collaboration with HBO and the impeccable work of our unparalleled cast and crew. We look forward to continuing the story of The Last of Us with Season 3!”
Season one was based on the complete first game from Naughty Dog. However, co-creators Mazin and Neil Druckmann (the latter also being responsible for the video games), had previously stated that the story from ‘The Last of Us: Part II’ video game would need more than one season to complete, so a renewal for a third season isn’t exactly surprising.
“To see The Last of Us brought to life so beautifully and faithfully has been a career highlight for me, and I am grateful for the fans’ enthusiastic and overwhelming support,” adds Druckmann. “Much of that success is thanks to my partner in crime, Craig Mazin, our partnership with HBO and our team at PlayStation Productions. On behalf of everyone at Naughty Dog, our cast and crew, thank you so much for allowing us this opportunity. We’re thrilled to bring you more of The Last of Us.”
As to whether they do more seasons after that is anyone’s guess. Druckmann has stated they don’t want to find themselves in a ‘Game Of Thrones’ type hole, where the TV show goes past the source material, and there are only two games to work with. There are currently no signs of a Part III video game, so it seems unlikely that it would happen in time for season four of the TV series. However, it is possible they could produce spin-offs set in the world of ‘The Last Of Us’, just not following Joel & Ellie’s story. We will have to wait and see!
”The Last Of Us’, based on the acclaimed video game franchise developed by Naughty Dog, is written and executive produced by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann.
