We’re back with another episode of the Geektown Radio podcast! This week I’m joined once again by Gray as we chat through a busy TV schedule, from red-carpet awards and twisty thrillers to newsroom satire and everyone’s favourite podcasters-turned-sleuths. Plus, we round up the latest renewals, cancellations, and upcoming UK TV highlights.
What We’ve Been Watching
Gray has been catching up on Ironheart, finally discovering it was better than expected, and admitted he’s late to the Reacher party but is now fully hooked. He also binged through The Assassin and How to Die Alone, while continuing his “reality review” with Destination X, Fortune Hotel, and The Inheritance. He even squeezed in Great British Bake Off and a procedural marathon of the FBI, Chicago shows, Fire Country, and SWAT.
Meanwhile, Dave tried out ITV’s new psychological thriller ‘Coldwater’, finished Foundation and Strange New Worlds, wrapped up The Handmaid’s Tale, and dived back into the brilliant return of ‘Only Murders in the Building’.
But the big four this week are…
The Emmys
The 2025 Emmy Awards handed out some surprising and well-deserved wins. Adolescence swept the board, including Best Drama, while Severance and The Studio also scored big. The elusive The Pitt finally made its presence known, although UK audiences are still waiting to see it. Stephen Graham took home a statue for Adolescence, though some felt Colin Farrell’s transformative Penguin performance should have clinched it. There were also historic wins, including 15-year-old Owen Cooper for Adolescence, Hannah Einbinder and Jean Smart for Hacks, and Tony Gilroy for Andor. Gray even used the single-take opening of Adolescence as a teaching tool for his students. All told, it was a strong year with no undeserving winners and some tough categories.
Coldwater
ITV’s new drama ‘Coldwater’ stars Andrew Lincoln as John, a stay-at-home dad whose bottled-up frustrations boil over after a park altercation, prompting a sudden move to a Scottish village. There he meets Tommy, played by Ewen Bremner, a charismatic neighbour with unsettling motives, alongside Eve Myles as Tommy’s wife and Indira Varma as John’s partner. Dave found the opening episode a little uneven, but the performances kept it engaging. The setup is odd, but with its strong cast and unsettling atmosphere, it could develop into a tense psychological drama. Episodes are streaming now on ITVX and airing weekly on ITV.
The Paper
Over on Sky, Gray started ‘The Paper’, a spinoff from The Office that focuses on the staff of a local newspaper. He admitted he was never a fan of The Office, but gave this a chance thanks to the cast, including Tim Key and Domhnall Gleeson. The pilot was shaky for him at first, but by the end he warmed to its sharp dialogue and awkward humour. With its mix of satire, workplace politics, and timely commentary, this one could become a sleeper hit if it finds its audience.
Only Murders In The Building
The hit Hulu/Disney+ comedy mystery is back for its fifth season, with Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez once again embroiled in murder and podcasting hijinks. This time, they are looking into the death of their building’s doorman, Lester. While authorities insist it was an accident, Charles, Oliver, and Mabel suspect otherwise. Guest stars this season include Christoph Waltz, Téa Leoni, Bobby Cannavale, and Dianne Wiest, with the first three episodes already available. Dave praised the clever writing, the bottle episode exploring Lester’s backstory, and the perfect balance of humour and suspense. A show that continues to prove lightning can strike five times.
TV News
In the news section, we cover Doug Naylor revealing that UKTV scrapped a planned Red Dwarf special, Foundation renewed for Season 4, more renewals at Apple and Prime, and the messy rights situation around Lionsgate’s The Hunting Wives. Plus, Netflix teams with Charlie Brooker for a new thriller, and CBS’s SWAT lives on via spinoff SWAT: Exiles.
