Now this is a curveball. Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) UK & Ireland has announced that ‘TLC’ is being “relaunched” in January 2026 as a free-to-air channel, bringing with it a major mix of scripted favourites and new commissions, including the UK debut of ‘Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage’ and a revival of ‘Mock The Week’.
The move marks a surprising shift for the company, which is also preparing to launch HBO Max in the UK in early 2026. While most media giants are pulling away from traditional TV in favour of streaming, WBD is doubling down by investing in its linear portfolio.
TLC goes free-to-air
The refreshed ‘TLC’ will be freely available to UK audiences via Freeview and Freesat, offering an entertainment mix that blends American sitcoms with original British comedy and reality formats.
On the scripted side, the line-up includes multi-award-winning ‘The Big Bang Theory’, its hit prequel ‘Young Sheldon’, the brand-new spin-off ‘Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage’ (making its UK premiere), and ‘Mike & Molly’.
The unscripted slate features a “new-look” version of ‘Mock The Week’, the beloved satirical panel show produced by Angst, alongside ‘Zero Stars’, a new comedy travel format from CPL featuring Roisin Conaty (After Life) and Sara Pascoe (Out Of Her Mind) as they journey around the world visiting destinations with the worst online reviews in search of hilariously bad experiences.
Existing favourites like ‘Dr Pimple Popper’, ‘My 600lb Life’, and the ‘90 Day Fiancé’ franchise (including ‘90 Day Fiancé: UK’) will also stay put, ensuring longtime fans still get their TLC fix.
A surprising strategy ahead of HBO Max
The timing of this relaunch is fascinating. Warner Bros. Discovery has already confirmed that HBO Max will officially launch in the UK in early 2026, finally unifying HBO, Discovery, and Warner Bros. content under one streaming roof.
When Disney launched Disney+ in the UK, it pulled back from linear TV almost entirely, shuttering most of its channels. WBD’s move goes the other way, expanding its free-to-air offering rather than reducing it. It’s easy to see this as a kind of “shop window” for the HBO Max launch, giving UK audiences a free taste of popular shows that may ultimately drive interest in the streamer.
Still, it’s encouraging news for traditional TV viewers, showing that WBD sees continued value in broadcast entertainment even as the industry leans heavily into streaming.
HGTV bows out, Really expands
In parallel with TLC’s relaunch, sister channel Really will absorb a number of HGTV’s lifestyle and property shows, such as ‘Celebrity IOU’, ‘Home Town’, and ‘My Lottery Dream Home’, as HGTV itself will sunset in the UK and Ireland. HGTV’s content will continue to be available through Discovery+.
From January 2026, WBD’s free-to-air portfolio will include Quest, Quest Red, Food Network, DMAX, Really, and the newly revamped TLC, covering everything from antiques and home improvement to comedy, motoring, and lifestyle. Combined with pay-TV outlets like Discovery Channel, Cartoon Network, and TNT Sports, this makes WBD the fifth-largest commercial broadcaster in the UK.
New commissions across the network
Beyond TLC, the company has also announced a raft of new factual and entertainment commissions. Quest will air ‘Francis Bourgeois and Chris Harris: We Saved a Train’, following the pair as they restore a dilapidated diesel locomotive. ‘Guz Khan’s Custom Cars’ will see the comedian trying his hand as a car modder, while the ‘Auction House’ franchise expands with new seasons of ‘Yorkshire Auction House’, ‘Celebrity Yorkshire Auction House’, and ‘Derbyshire Auction House’.
Meanwhile, Henry Cole and Fuzz Townshend return for another round of ‘Shed and Buried’, including new spin-offs ‘Shed and Buried: Classic Cars’ and ‘Shed and Buried: Classic Bikes’. Over on Food Network, Adam Richman (Man v. Food) heads to the Mediterranean for ‘Adam Richman Eats Italy’.
What WBD says
Graham Lafferty, SVP Content Strategy & Networks, WBD UK & Ireland, said:
“We are thrilled to announce a new-look line-up of content for TLC in the UK and Ireland for January 2026 — and that we are able to bring the channel to more viewers with a move to free-to-air in the UK. Through TLC, we are excited to commission and curate a broad entertainment channel that spans both scripted and unscripted content, including award-winning shows like The Big Bang Theory, through to a new-look British comedy staple like Mock The Week.”
He added that these new and returning series “demonstrate our ongoing commitment to linear television and working with both new and long-standing valued UK production partners to commission local stories and local talent for local audiences.”
The bigger picture
By relaunching ‘TLC’ as a free-to-air channel just ahead of HBO Max’s arrival, Warner Bros. Discovery is keeping one foot in both worlds — building buzz for its streaming future while reaffirming its belief that linear television still matters. Whether it’s a savvy shop window or a broader play for UK viewership, it’s certainly one of the more unexpected moves of the year… and one that’s likely to make plenty of Big Bang-level noise.
