Idris Elba Returns For ‘Hijack’ Season 2 On Apple TV This January 2026

by Dave Elliott

Apple TV has released the first trailer and confirmed the premiere for Hijack Season 2, with Idris Elba (Luther) back in action and once again caught in the middle of a deadly hostage crisis. The tense real-time thriller that had audiences gripping their seats returns this January 2026, swapping aeroplanes for underground trains in a new story set in Berlin.

In the new season, Elba’s crisis negotiator, Sam Nelson, finds himself facing yet another hijacking, which immediately raises the question: how does one man end up in two of these situations? It is the same kind of problem faced by the “Speed” and “Die Hard” franchises, where being very good at staying alive turns out to be a curse. This time, a packed Berlin U-Bahn train and its commuters are taken hostage while authorities race to save hundreds of lives. Once again, every second counts, and one wrong move could lead to disaster.

The eight-episode season comes from returning creators George Kay (Lupin, Criminal) and Jim Field Smith (Criminal, Litvinenko), with Field Smith once again directing and both serving as executive producers. The series is produced by 60Forty Films and Idiotlamp Productions, alongside Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, and Tom Nash.

Season two brings back familiar faces Christine Adams, Max Beesley, and Archie Panjabi, joined by new cast members Christian Näthe (Ballon), Clare-Hope Ashitey (Top Boy, Doctor Foster), Lisa Vicari (Dark), Toby Jones (Mr Bates vs The Post Office, Detectorists), Karima McAdams (Dune: Prophecy, Deep State), and Christiane Paul (Counterpart, FBI: International).

The first season of ‘Hijack’ became one of Apple TV’s biggest original hits, praised for its breakneck pace and Elba’s commanding performance. It earned a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and landed on the Nielsen Streaming Originals Top 10 list, with critics describing it as “a shot of pure adrenaline” and “tension-filled television that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats.”

Fans have already been joking about future instalments, predicting Hijack 3: Cruise Control or Hijack 4: Space Station, but Apple clearly sees more to explore with Sam Nelson. With Elba’s trademark calm under pressure and the show’s trademark intensity, the second season looks ready to deliver another heart-pounding ride.

Hijack Season 2 premieres Wednesday, 14th January 2026 on Apple TV, launching with two episodes before rolling out weekly.
