The world’s most intense detective is heading back onto the streets of London, as Netflix has confirmed a brand new ‘Luther’ film is on the way, with Ruth Wilson (The Affair) officially returning alongside Idris Elba (Hijack, Beast).
The new movie continues the story of Elba’s tortured detective John Luther, created by Neil Cross, who wrote the original BBC drama and the 2023 Netflix feature ‘Luther: The Fallen Sun’. The next chapter sees a series of brutal, seemingly random murders terrorising London, forcing Luther out of hiding and back into the fray. Though with enemies on all sides, saving the city might be the least of his worries.
Jamie Payne, who directed episodes of the series and Fallen Sun, is once again behind the camera. He described the project as “a true joy to be back on the streets of Lutherland with the supreme talents that are Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley,” adding that he was “thrilled to be reunited with the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan, played by the extraordinarily talented Ruth Wilson.”
Crowley returns as Schenk, Luther’s long-time colleague and one-time nemesis. “Luther, Alice and Schenk are more than characters to me, they’re family,” said creator Neil Cross. “I never stop wondering where they are, what’s become of them… and what horrors might be stirring in the shadows of London while Luther’s not around. So we decided to get together and find out what happens next.”
Production is due to begin in February, with Elba also producing alongside Cross, Gina Carter, Tim Lewis, and Chernin Entertainment under Elba’s 22Summers banner.
‘Luther’ began life on the BBC in 2010, running for five seasons across the decade, with Elba’s haunted detective earning him multiple awards and a devoted global fanbase. Wilson’s psychopathic Alice Morgan, first introduced in the debut season, quickly became one of British TV’s most compelling villains, and her long-awaited return is sure to delight Lutherites everywhere.
‘Luther’ does not yet have a premiere date, but will stream worldwide on Netflix. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
