‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Sequel Officially Ordered By Netflix As Directors Return

by Dave Elliott

Well, this is about as surprising as a demon showing up at a K-pop concert.

Netflix has officially confirmed a sequel to ‘KPop Demon Hunters’, with writer-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans returning for the follow-up. The new film will also mark the first project under an exclusive multi-year writing and directing partnership the pair have signed with Netflix across animation. Sony Pictures Animation is once again producing.

The original film became an enormous hit for the streamer, racking up more than 500 million views since debuting in June 2025, while its music has also been smashing through barriers in the real world. Netflix says HUNTR/X became the first K-pop girl group to hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, while “Golden” became the first K-pop song to win a Grammy Award. The film is also currently nominated for two Oscars, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Golden.”

For anyone who somehow missed the phenomenon first time round, ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ follows K-pop superstars HUNTR/X, who balance life as global music icons with their secret identities as demon hunters, protecting fans from supernatural threats. The first movie saw Rumi, Mira, and Zoey facing off against the Saja Boys, a rival boy band who were, naturally, demons in disguise. Because of course they were.

In the announcement, Kang said: “I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters. There’s so much more to this world we have built, and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.”

Appelhans added: “These characters are like family to us, their world has become our second home. We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them, and watch them evolve — and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation, and story can come together.”

Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria said: “With KPop Demon Hunters, Maggie and Chris didn’t just reach audiences, they ignited a global fandom that crossed languages, generations, and genres. We’re incredibly proud to deepen our partnership with them and, together with our partners at Sony Pictures Animation, build this universe in ways that will surprise and delight fans all over the world.”

Chairman of Netflix Film Dan Lin added: “Maggie and Chris were brave enough to take a bold creative swing by telling a story that was both deeply personal and broke cultural barriers. At Netflix, our goal is to make someone’s favorite movie, and they did that by making the most popular Netflix movie of all time! There’s so much more story to tell, and we can’t wait to bring more HUNTR/X to fans everywhere.”

Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville, Presidents of Sony Pictures Animation, also said: “Championing the bold creative visions of our filmmakers is at the heart of everything we do at Sony Pictures Animation. Maggie and Chris brought their incredibly distinct perspectives to this film, telling a story audiences embraced around the globe. We are thrilled to work with them to expand their vision in the next chapter.”

There’s no premiere date yet for the sequel, so this is very much a “calm down, fandom” announcement rather than a “mark your calendar” one. Still, given how huge the first film became for Netflix, a follow-up always felt less like a possibility and more like the most obvious move in the room.

‘KPop Demon Hunters’ sequel does not yet have a premiere date but will air on Netflix in the UK.
