Bad news for anyone hoping ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ might have a longer mission ahead, as the Paramount series is now set to end with its upcoming second season.
The sci-fi drama, set in the 32nd century following the events of ‘Star Trek: Discovery’, was renewed unusually early back in 2024, before the first season had even premiered. However, despite that vote of confidence, it now looks like the academy doors will be closing after Season 2.
In a joint statement, CBS Studios and Paramount said: “We’re incredibly proud of the ambition, passion, and creativity that went into bringing Star Trek: Starfleet Academy to life. The series introduced audiences to a bold new group of characters, welcomed familiar faces, and expanded the Star Trek universe in exciting new ways.
“We’re grateful to Alex Kurtzman, Noga Landau, Gaia Violo, and the entire cast and crew who pushed storytelling boundaries in the spirit of Gene Roddenberry’s vision. We look forward to sharing the upcoming second and final season with everyone, and continuing to celebrate the cast, crew, and all that was accomplished with this series.”
The show follows a fresh class of Starfleet cadets as they come of age at one of the most legendary institutions in the galaxy, learning what it takes to become officers while dealing with rivalries, friendships, romance and threats to both the Academy and the Federation itself. The cast includes Holly Hunter (Saving Grace), Paul Giamatti (Billions), Sandro Rosta (The Chelsea Detective), Karim Diané (One Of Us Is Lying), Kerrice Brooks (The Prom), George Hawkins (Tell Me Everything), Bella Shepard (Wolf Pack), Zoë Steiner (Significant Others), Gina Yashere (Bob Hearts Abishola), Robert Picardo (Star Trek: Voyager) and Tig Notaro (One Mississippi).
The first season drew a fairly mixed response from viewers, even if critics were warmer on it, and it never managed to break onto Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming chart. That may well have played a part in Paramount deciding this new Trek class would only get two years on campus.
Showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau also released a letter to fans confirming the series is now in post-production on its second and final season, saying they are proud of what the team achieved and promising they will “finish strong.” The note also leaned heavily into the core ideals of ‘Star Trek’, reflecting on Gene Roddenberry’s hopeful vision of the future and the importance of diversity, curiosity and compassion at a time when those themes still feel particularly relevant.
There is no return date yet for ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ Season 2. Season 1 is available in full on Paramount+.
