HBO has released the first official teaser for its upcoming ‘Harry Potter‘ TV series, and it also comes with a pretty major update, confirming the show will land this Christmas on HBO, and on HBO Max in markets where the platform is available, including the UK & Ireland.
The first season will officially be titled ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, which gives us the clearest sign yet that this really is going all in on a book-by-book adaptation. The opening run will span eight episodes, adapting the first novel as Harry is pulled from life with the Dursleys into the much stranger, more magical world of Hogwarts.
According to the official logline, Harry’s journey begins when a Hogwarts letter arrives on his 11th birthday, opening the door to “fun, friendship and magic,” but also forcing him to confront a dangerous enemy tied to his past. It is a setup everyone knows, of course, but stretched across a full season, there should be a lot more room for the smaller character beats, school life, and book details that the films had to race through.
Leading the cast is Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, alongside Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. They’re joined by John Lithgow (Conclave) as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer (Ozark) as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu (The Lazarus Project) as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) as Rubeus Hagrid.
The wider Hogwarts and wizarding world ensemble is also filling out fast, with Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Warwick Davis (Willow) as Filius Flitwick, and Sirine Saba as Pomona Sprout among the newly confirmed names. Additional cast includes Daniel Rigby (Flowers) as Vernon Dursley, Bel Powley (A Small Light) as Petunia Dursley, Paul Whitehouse (The Fast Show) as Argus Filch, Johnny Flynn (Ripley) as Lucius Malfoy, Bertie Carvel (Dalgliesh) as Cornelius Fudge, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Katherine Parkinson (The IT Crowd) as Molly Weasley, and Anton Lesser (Andor) as Garrick Ollivander.
Behind the camera, the series is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, with Mark Mylod executive producing and directing multiple episodes. J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts and David Heyman also serve as executive producers.
There is still a lot we haven’t seen yet, but giving the first season the full ‘Philosopher’s Stone’ title and a Christmas launch window makes this feel very real, very big, and very much like HBO is positioning it as one of the headline TV events of the year.
