Amazon MGM Studios may have found the creative force to lead its live-action adaptation of ‘Warhammer 40,000’, with Mike Flanagan reportedly in talks to join the series starring and executive produced by Henry Cavill (The Witcher, Man of Steel).
According to Deadline, Flanagan is discussing an executive producer role on the project. However, his potential involvement may extend considerably further, as he is also reportedly in talks to serve as showrunner, writer and director.
Nothing has been formally confirmed yet, but Flanagan already has a close relationship with Amazon MGM Studios after signing a multiyear overall deal with the company earlier this year.
The first series developed under that agreement is Prime Video’s upcoming ‘Carrie’, Flanagan’s adaptation of Stephen King’s iconic novel, which premieres this October.
Flanagan has plenty of experience building unsettling and ambitious worlds for television. His previous work includes ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’, ‘Midnight Mass’, ‘The Haunting of Bly Manor’, ‘The Midnight Club’ and ‘The Haunting of Hill House’.
His feature film credits also include the Stephen King adaptations ‘Doctor Sleep’, ‘Gerald’s Game’ and ‘The Life of Chuck’, alongside ‘Ouija: Origin of Evil’, ‘Hush’, ‘Before I Wake’, ‘Oculus’ and ‘Absentia’.
Amazon MGM Studios acquired the global rights to Games Workshop’s ‘Warhammer 40,000’ universe in December 2024, with Cavill attached to star and executive produce.
Set in the far future, the franchise sees humanity fighting for survival against traitors, hostile alien empires and the reality-corrupting forces of malevolent gods. So, not exactly the most relaxing corner of the galaxy.
Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Natalie Viscuso partnered with Cavill to secure the rights before bringing the project to Amazon. They executive produce alongside Cavill, Games Workshop’s Andy Smillie and Max Bottrill, and Amazon MGM Studios.
Flanagan’s experience blending horror, character drama and large-scale mythology could make him a very interesting choice to oversee the adaptation, although fans may want to keep the celebratory chainswords safely stored away until the deal is official.
‘Warhammer 40,000’ is currently in development for Prime Video, with no premiere date announced.
