BBC Drops Trailer For New Liverpool Crime Drama ‘The Cage’ Starring Sheridan Smith & Michael Socha

by Dave Elliott

The BBC has unveiled the trailer for The Cage, a new five-part crime drama from Tony Schumacher (The Responder) that looks set to deliver another tense, character-driven thriller, this time set against the backdrop of Liverpool’s casino scene.

At the centre of the story is Leanne, played by Sheridan Smith (Cilla, No Return), a casino cashier facing the very real threat of losing the family home. In a bid to protect her family’s future, she starts skimming money from the casino safe. The problem is, she soon discovers she is not the only one helping themselves to the cash.

That is where Michael Socha (Showtrial, This Is England) comes in as Matty, Leanne’s boss, who is also dipping into the safe. From there, things spiral fast, as the pair find themselves on a collision course not only with each other, but also with the local gangster they’re stealing from, and the police closing in around them. It sounds like exactly the sort of setup that could turn into gloriously messy chaos very quickly.

The cast also includes Barry Sloane (House of the Dragon) as Gary Packer, Geraldine James (Dope Girls) as Nancy Packer, Anton Bibby (Liverpool Narcos) as Thomas Chapel, Freya Jones (Bolan’s Shoes) as Emily Flynn, Sophie Mensah (Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale) as Fen, Shaun Mason (Extraordinary) as Alan, Louis Emerick (The Power of Parker) as Paul, Sue Jenkins (Brookside) as Shelagh Flynn, Eileen O’Brien (Not Going Out) as Nanna, and Mona Goodwin (Extraordinary) as Trace.

The series is directed by Al Mackay and comes from Element Pictures, the company behind Normal People and Poor Things, so there is some serious pedigree behind it. Shot in and around Liverpool and Merseyside, ‘The Cage’ has the look of a grounded, high-stakes crime drama with a strong local identity, which should suit Schumacher’s style nicely.

Given Schumacher’s track record with ‘The Responder’, this already feels like one to keep an eye on. A morally compromised lead, a pressured working-class setting, criminals, police, and a situation that is obviously not going to stay under control for very long. That is usually a very good recipe.

The Cage’ premieres Sunday, 26th April 2026 on BBC iPlayer, with episodes airing weekly at 9pm on BBC One.
