‘Big Bang Theory’ Spinoff ‘Stuart Fails to Save The Universe’ Set For July Launch As Danny Elfman Joins The Series

by Dave Elliott

Fans of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ universe won’t have too much longer to wait, as spinoff Stuart Fails to Save The Universe has now been confirmed to land this July on HBO Max, with Danny Elfman (Batman, Beetlejuice, Wednesday) also coming aboard to create the show’s original theme music.

The comedy was unveiled at CCXP Mexico City, where HBO Max also released a batch of first-look images from the series, giving us a better idea of just how gloriously odd this thing is likely to get. After all, a multiverse comedy centred on Stuart was probably never going to play it straight.

The new series follows comic book store owner Stuart Bloom, played by Kevin Sussman (The Big Bang Theory, Ugly Betty), who ends up tasked with restoring reality after breaking a device built by Sheldon and Leonard and accidentally triggering a multiverse Armageddon. Helping, or possibly making things worse, are Denise, Bert and Barry Kripke, played by Lauren Lapkus (The Wrong Missy, Orange Is the New Black), Brian Posehn (The Mandalorian, The Big Bang Theory) and John Ross Bowie (Speechless, The Big Bang Theory).

Along the way, the gang will run into alternate-universe versions of familiar characters from ‘The Big Bang Theory’, which should give the show plenty of room to lean into both sci-fi silliness and sitcom madness. Given it’s built around Stuart trying to save existence itself, the title rather suggests things may not go especially smoothly.

Behind the scenes, the series comes from Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn and Bill Prady, and is produced by Chuck Lorre Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. The addition of Elfman on theme music also gives it a slightly more offbeat flavour than your average sitcom spinoff, which feels about right for a show involving comic shops, broken science gadgets and the possible collapse of reality.

While the announcement only confirms the show for HBO Max, it seems highly likely that means it will also arrive on HBO Max in the UK, given the service is now available here too. We’re just waiting on formal UK confirmation.
