Disney+ has confirmed that ‘Alice and Steve‘ will land this June, with the new British comedy-drama making a strong early impression after its world premiere at the CANNESERIES.
The six-part series, which blends awkward comedy with messy relationship drama, screened its first two episodes at the festival and received a standing ovation, giving it a solid launch ahead of its streaming debut.
The show stars Nicola Walker (Unforgotten, The Split), Jemaine Clement (What We Do in the Shadows, Flight of the Conchords), Yali Topol Margalith (The Tattooist of Auschwitz, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder) and Joel Fry (Our Flag Means Death, Cruella).
Behind the camera, the series is created by Sophie Goodhart (Sex Education), directed by Tom Kingsley (Stath Lets Flats), and produced by Clerkenwell Films, the company behind Baby Reindeer.
A friendship turned into a full-scale war
The premise leans into pure chaos. Alice is left reeling when her best friend Steve begins dating her 26-year-old daughter, Izzy. That one decision detonates their entire dynamic, turning a close friendship into a full-blown feud.
As Alice attempts to sabotage the relationship, Steve proves more than capable of fighting back, escalating things into what sounds like a gloriously messy battle of wills. It is pitched as an anti-romantic comedy, digging into the blurred lines between love, loyalty and revenge.
Expect plenty of awkward tension, emotional fallout, and the kind of sharply observed character drama that UK audiences tend to lap up when it is done right.
Early buzz looks promising
A standing ovation at a festival like CANNESERIES does not guarantee a hit, but it is rarely a bad sign. Combined with a strong cast and a creative team with proven comedy credentials, this feels like one to keep an eye on.
It also continues Disney+’s push into more grounded, character-led UK drama under its general entertainment banner, which has been quietly building a solid slate alongside the bigger franchise titles.
‘Alice and Steve’ Season 1 premieres Monday, 8th June 2026 on Disney+.
