The game is very much back on, as the BBC has confirmed ‘The Celebrity Traitors‘ will return for Series 2 this October, with Claudia Winkleman welcoming 21 famous faces to the Scottish Highlands for another round of lying, backstabbing and increasingly suspicious breakfast conversations.
The BBC has also released a new trailer for the hugely successful celebrity edition, showing the players meeting one another before being thrown into an explosive mission, as Claudia puts the finishing touches to her favourite game.
Following an extended opening episode, ‘The Celebrity Traitors’ will air twice a week, on Thursday and Friday evenings at 8pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
This year’s group contains another wonderfully eclectic mixture of people who may soon deeply regret agreeing to spend time together in a castle. Joining Claudia are Amol Rajan, Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us), James Acaster, James Blunt, Jerry Hall, Joanne McNally, Joe Lycett, Julie Hesmondhalgh (Mr Bates vs The Post Office), King Kenny, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Maya Jama, Michael Sheen (Good Omens), Miranda Hart (Call the Midwife), Myha’la (Industry), Professor Hannah Fry, Richard E. Grant (Loki), Rob Beckett, Romesh Ranganathan, Ross Kemp (EastEnders), Sebastian Croft (Heartstopper) and Sharon Rooney (Barbie).
The 21 celebrities will compete in the ultimate game of detection, trust and betrayal, with the surviving players hoping to secure a prize of up to £100,000 for a charity of their choice. Of course, before they get anywhere near the money, the Faithful will have to work out which of their fellow famous faces have secretly been selected as Traitors, while the Traitors merrily murder their way through the cast.
Also returning is ‘The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked’, the official companion video podcast hosted by Ed Gamble. The show will air on BBC One immediately following the main programme, as well as being available through BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds.
Ed will once again be joined by freshly banished and murdered contestants, alongside previous celebrity and non-celebrity players, to pick apart the latest betrayals, mind games and occasionally spectacularly terrible pieces of detective work. Episodes will include exclusive interviews and unseen footage, including the moment the Faithful discover who the Traitors actually were.
BBC Sounds will also offer bonus editions featuring extended celebrity interviews and deeper analysis of the gameplay.
There is an additional treat this year with ‘Traitor or Faithful? Claudia Decides’, a new programme revealing more about how Claudia selects her Traitors.
The special sees Claudia getting to know the celebrities before deciding who has the necessary qualities to embrace the dark side and who is destined to remain a Faithful. It will be released on BBC iPlayer on launch night from 9.15pm.
The first series proved to be an absolute monster for the BBC, averaging 14.9 million viewers across its run and reaching 15.4 million for the finale. According to the broadcaster, that made the finale the highest-rated episode of an entertainment programme since 2016.
With those numbers, it is perhaps unsurprising the BBC is making the most of its return. Between the main show, ‘The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked’ and ‘Traitor or Faithful? Claudia Decides’, viewers should have plenty of opportunity to analyse every suspicious glance, questionable accusation and disastrous Round Table decision.
