DC’s ‘Titans’ TV series Adds Jason Todd (aka Robin 2/Red Hood) To The Mix

It’s been a little while since we’ve had any updates on DC’s new live-action Titans series, but a little bit of news piqued my interest this week. The 7th episode of the new show is apparently titled ‘Jason Todd’.

For those of you that aren’t up on your Bat-history, Jason Todd was the 2nd Robin after Dick Grayson. The character was a street kid who Batman catches trying to steal the tyres off the Batmobile. He was universally disliked as Robin and was killed off after a public vote in the 1988 ‘A Death in the Family’ storyline. However, this is a comic book, so no one stays dead for that long… Due to some “timey-wimey” messing about by Superboy-Prime, Jason is brought back to life, eventually donning the mantle of ‘Red Hood’.

Written and produced by Akiva Goldsman (‘Star Trek: Discovery’, ‘The Dark Tower’, ‘Fringe’), DC God Geoff Johns (‘The Flash’, ‘Arrow’) and the Arrowverse’s Greg Berlanti, the tv series centres around Dick Grayson, aka Batman’s partner, Robin. After years as part of the Dynamic Duo, Dick struggled to find his place outside the Dark Knight’s shadow. Finally striking out as his own man, he emerges as a leader, mentor and father figure to his new family, the Titans.

Whilst there is no official casting of Jason Todd yet, it’s rumoured the role has gone to Curran Walters (‘Too Close to Home’, ‘Game of Silence’) who has been seen on set. We should point out, it’s very unlikely we’ll be seeing Red Hood on screen at this point. ‘Titans’ is the story of Dick leaving Robin behind and becoming Nightwing, so it seems more likely we will be seeing Jason taking over the role of Robin as Dick moves on to the tight blue spandex.

Given that Walters is on set, whatever role he turns out to be playing, he will be joining Brenton Thwaites (‘Home & Away’, ‘Maleficent’) who stars as Dick Grayson, Teagan Croft (‘Home and Away’, ‘The Osiris Child’) starring as Raven, Anna Diop (’24: Legacy’) playing Starfire, and Ryan Potter (‘Big Hero 6’) as Beast Boy. Alan Ritchson (‘Smallville’) takes the role of Hawk with Minka Kelly (‘Friday Night Lights’) playing his partner Dove and rounding out the members of the Titans.

Titans is due to land on DC (as yet untitled) direct-to-consumer digital service but we don’t know if this will be worldwide or only available in the US. We’ll let you know when we hear more.
