Chucky TV Series Being Developed by SyFy US

Chucky and friends are slashing their way into the TV screen and SyFy US has secured the development rights for the series. The TV series will be named as ‘Chucky’ and produced by Don Mancini, who wrote all films in the ‘Child’s Play’ universe. David Kirschner will also produce the series and alongside Mancini, he is known for producing all the seven ‘Child’s Play’ films.

Mancini said that he has long wanted to make a TV series adaptation of the franchise. SyFy is also known for its various popular mystery and horror TV shows, making it a perfect platform for Chucky. Mancini promises that the TV series will be a fresh take and the development team can explore the character with much more depth.

Chucky is a doll character that first appeared in the ‘Child’s Play’ film in the 1988 and it’s possessed by the soul of Charles Lee Ray, a notorious serial killer. Tom Holland directed the original film and since then, the ‘Child’s Play’ franchise has spawned six more films, with the latest one, ‘Cult of Chucky’, released in 2017.

It’s quite rare that a network is able to attach original creators in the development of a TV show. The team is also working on a remake of the original 1988 ‘Child’s Play’ film, so it’s a busy year for them. Other than Mancini and David Kirschner, SyFy is also adding Nick Antosca the creator of ‘Channel Zero’ into the team.

The classic 1988 ‘Child’s Play’ was a psychological horror film, while its six sequels are more about slasher and dark comedy films. As the franchise progressed, it becomes more campy and satirical. ‘The Bride of Chucky’ (1998) and ‘Seed of Chucky’ (2004), could be considered as horror comedy. The next sequel was the ‘Curse of Chucky’ and it returned to the full-fledged horror genre, like the first three instalments, although maintaining some minor campy horror elements. In the films, it’s often shown that Charles Lee Ray, the evil soul that possesses Chucky seeks to finally reside in a human body.

Today, Chucky already becomes one of the most iconic characters in the horror industry along with Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, Ghostface, Michael Myers, Pinhead and Pennywise. Chucky was nominated in 1999 as the Best Villain for the MTV Movie Award in the ‘Bride of Chucky’ (1998). In the original film, the possessed doll Chucky was owned by the young Andy Barclay and it started to terrorize his family. Chucky returned in ‘Child’s Play 2’ (1990) and the resurrected doll terrorizes Andy again, who is now placed in foster care. In ‘Child’s Play 3’ (1991), Chucky re-emerges to continue his pursuit of the now teenage Andy.

In ‘Bride of Chucky’ (1998), Chucky is resurrected by the former female accomplice of Charles Lee Ray, Tiffany Valentine who was voiced by Jennifer Tilly. Tiffany willingly transfers her soul into a bride doll and with Chucky, pursues a young couple, with the goal of transferring themselves into their physical human bodies.

‘Seed of Chucky’ (2004) takes place six years after the previous film. In this film, Glen/Glenda, the offspring of Chucky and Tiffany, resurrects their parents. The trio then terrorize the actress Jennifer Tilly. The Curse of Chucky (2013) is a film with straightforward horror elements and takes place nine years after the 5th film, with Chucky tormenting the wheelchair-bound Nica Pierce. In Cult of Chucky (2017), the evil doll continues to torment Nica and the now adult Andy reappeared to stop Chucky.

Now we’re finally seeing ‘Chucky’ the TV series being produced, it probably won’t be long until we see a new craze with spin-offs cashing in and maybe even sites like Potsofgold offering Chucky themed games, to take over the old & free games currently available.

Other than ‘Chucky’, SyFy is also preparing other new series. ‘Cipher’ is a new series produced by Danny McBride and it follows the story of a father and a child, while an AI war is raging. ‘The (Future) Cult Classic’ is a unique combination of speculative satire, slasher and high school drama, made into a dark comedy.
