‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Moves To Paramount+ Globally (Which Hasn’t Launched In The UK Yet…)

Some slightly frustrating news… Star Trek: Discovery, which aired its first 3 seasons on Netflix internationally the day after the USA, will be moving to Paramount+ globally… The only issue with that is that Paramount+ is not launching in the UK until 2022, meaning we have to wait for Season 4.

“As we rapidly expand our global streaming footprint, we are bringing more of our top titles home to ViacomCBS for Paramount+ markets around the world,” President, International Streaming Services, ViacomCBS, Kelly Day, told Deadline. “We have a strong global and local content pipeline that positions us for success across our regions, and repatriating beloved series like Star Trek: Discovery for Paramount+ is another step forward as we bring fans more must-watch series worldwide.”

Back in August it was announced that Paramount+ would be launching in the UK, both as a standalone app, and in partnership with Sky, where Sky Cinema customers will get it for free as part of their package. The service is due to launch in “Early 2022”, but we don’t have an exact date yet.

Whilst ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ will be going “home” to Paramount+, ‘Star Trek: Picard’ and ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ are both staying on Amazon, at least, for now… That may change in future as ViacomCBS seeks to claw back more of its content for its own service. Other shows which could potentially be affected moving forward would be ‘The Good Fight’, which currently airs on More4 in the UK, and ‘Why Women Kill’, which currently airs on Alibi. There is also ‘Evil’, which airs on Alibi, and ‘SEAL Team’, which airs on Sky, both of which were originally CBS shows, but were moved onto Paramount+ in the USA for their most recent seasons.

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 4 finds newly appointed Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery facing a threat unlike any they’ve ever encountered. With Federation and non-Federation worlds alike feeling the impact, they must confront the unknown and work together to ensure a hopeful future for all.

As of right now, we don’t know when Paramount+ will launch in the UK, but when it does, ‘Star Trek: Discovery‘ Season 4 will be on it. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add it via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.

Don’t have Sky cinema, don’t want another subscription just for one show and more importantly – I can’t afford another subscription! Hopefully I’ll be able to ask for the blu-ray boxset, when it comes out, as a birthday present or something!

Well, now I won’t be able to see it! Thanks! All the good stuff is kept for the US.

Thank God my Netflix subscription isn’t paying for this crap anymore. S1 was ok, downhill and painful since.

Well, that’s very annoying. I don’t have Sky Cinema so I won’t be able to see this without adding yet another subscription, I presume. For one show?

Dan, below, does have a point, I suppose. Still, I don’t have Prime just for Picard, so I would rather keep Prime than get Paramount.

It might be inconvenient in the short term but having all Star Trek TV shows and films all on one streaming service will be great in the long term. Even right now watching all the Star Trek TV shows requires a minimum of Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, and many of the films aren’t included so it’s not a complete collection.

When does Contract run out with Amazon for Picard

I don’t know specifically. The next season of Picard has been filmed I think so I’m assuming Amazon bought the rights to it already whulich is why it isn’t moving yet. They then went into shooting season 3 so it’s possible they have that too… Just don’t know for sure unfortunately.

I would say this pretty much guarantees Strange New Worlds will be on Paramount+ as I can’t see why they would sell it somewhere else when they’re clawing back the other shows.

Apparently it might be launching as early as January.

Yarr… I suspect there may be a lot of that… (not that I approve, obviously, but what do they think would happen…) ;)

Sadly there will be some freeloaders who want to watch these shows but also don’t want to pay for them. When I was a kid if something was too expensive I simply had to do without, such as pay TV channels like Cartoon Network.

When I were a kid, we only had BBC and I remember ITV starting. :-)

Youngsters today…

I can remember people in some areas complaining about not being able to receive the then new Channel 5, but that’s as far back as it goes for me. Not that I’d be complaining if I didn’t have access to that channel, as I haven’t watched it since they ditched Gotham a good few years ago now.

There will be people before you who had no TV at all, there’s always someone more hard done by. If people want to watch a TV show like The Mandalorian then they should pay up or do without. Nobody’s going to die if they don’t get to watch a Star Wars TV show. There’s stuff I would have liked to have watched as a kid, but couldn’t because my parents didn’t want to pay for Sky TV. I got over it and moved on.

I’m aware being anti-piracy is probably an unpopular view on the internet, but I don’t care about internet cool points. I use this website frequently for example so I have the decency to not use an adblocker, I understand the running of the website has to be paid for somehow. It’s not all that different a concept to paying for TV shows on a premium streaming service.

For those who can’t afford it there are good free and legal alternatives with adverts out there like Amazon’s Freevee, All4, My5, UKTV Play, Plex, Pluto TV, parts of Rakuten TV among others.
