NBC Developing 'New Amsterdam' Sequel Series Following Max's Daughter

When the medical drama ‘New Amsterdam’ came to something of an abrupt end last year, it did manage to set up the interesting possibility of a spin-off. Now NBC has begun developing that show, which would follow Max’s daughter Luna as the Medical Director of New Amsterdam.

Coming from original series creator David Schulner, the sequel series, currently titled ‘New Amsterdam: Tomorrow’, would be set 30 years after the events of the original series, following Luna Goodwin as she steps into her father’s role of Medical Director of New Amsterdam Hospital. The show would explore the ways artificial intelligence would help advance the medical industry in the future.

The concept for this was set up in the finale of the original show, which saw Molly Griggs (Servant, Dr. Death, Prodigal Son) play the grown-up version of Luna in a series of flashforwards. It is currently unclear if Griggs would return to play the role should this get picked up to series, or if they would recast. Ryan Eggold, who played Max in the original show is currently not involved according to Deadline, who broke the news. The series ended with Max leaving New Amsterdam to take up a job for the World Health Organisation in Geneva, Switzerland, but we don’t know his status in the future timeline, so it is possible he could be brought back for guest spots if Eggold is amenable to that (and would be prepared to have some ageing up makeup done I guess!)

The potential series is being developed by Schulner under his production company, Mount Moriah, which has an overall deal with Universal Television. Peter Horton, who was EP and director on the original show would direct, and Eric Manheimer, who wrote the book on which ‘New Amsterdam’ was based, would also exec produce. Universal Television would serve as the studio.

To be clear, ‘New Amsterdam: Tomorrow’ is currently “in development”, so may not go to series or even get a pilot, but we’ll let you know if and when we hear more.
