‘Halo’ Series Cancelled By Paramount, But Producers Seeking New Home

by Dave Elliott

Master Chief may be able to fight off waves of Covenant, but streaming services are another issue as Paramount+ cancels the Halo TV series after two seasons, however, the producers are looking for a new broadcaster.

Led by showrunner and executive producer David Wiener (Brave New World), the series takes place in the universe that first debuted in 2001 with the launch of Xbox’s first HALO game. Dramatizing an epic 26th-century conflict between humanity and an alien threat known as the Covenant, HALO the series weaves deeply drawn personal stories with action, adventure and a richly imagined vision of the future.

“We are extremely proud of this ambitious series,” commented Paramount+ in a statement, “and would like to thank our partners at Xbox, 343 Industries and Amblin Television, along with showrunner and executive producer David Wiener, his fellow executive producers, the entire cast led by Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief and the amazing crew for all their outstanding work. We wish everyone the best going forward.”

The TV series somewhat divided fans of the game, as it rather drastically deviated from the source material, most notably having Master Chief remove his helmet (and his entire suit!) at multiple points. However, it was a high-quality sci-fi drama, and for more casual fans (like myself) I found it rather enjoyable. This may not be the end for the show, as Paramount+ has given it’s blessing for the producers to shop the series to other broadcasters and streamers. That doesn’t always work out, but it does, at least, give them a lifeline.

“We deeply appreciate the millions of fans who propelled the Halo series to be a global success and we remain committed to broadening the Halo universe in different ways in the future,” adds 343 Industries. “We are grateful to Amblin and Paramount for their partnership in bringing our expansive sci-fi universe to viewers around the world.”

The series starred Halo starred Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief, Natascha McElhone as Dr. Halsey, Jen Taylor as Cortana, Bokeem Woodbine, Shabana Azmi, Natasha Culzac, Olive Gray, Yerin Ha, Bentley Kalu, Kate Kennedy, Charlie Murphy and Danny Sapani.

‘HALO’ was produced by Showtime in association with 343 Industries and Amblin Television. The second season was executive produced by David Wiener alongside Steven Spielberg, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey for Amblin Television. Kiki Wolfkill served as executive producer for Xbox/343 Industries with Otto Bathurst and Toby Leslie for One Big Picture and Gian Paolo Varani.

We’ll have to wait and see if the producers can find a new home for the ‘Halo‘ TV series, but as of this moment, it is cancelled after two seasons. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified if/when they get a UK premiere date.
