James Spader To Return As Ultron In ‘WandaVison’ Follow Up Series With Paul Bettany

by Dave Elliott

It appears Vision could be about to meet his maker (again) as reports suggest James Spader is to return in the untitled ‘WandaVison’ follow-up series starring Paul Bettany from ‘Star Trek: Picard’ showrunner Terry Matalas.

Although the show, which is being informally referred to as ‘Vision Quest’, hasn’t officially been announced by Disney yet, news first popped up about it back in March. According to THR, who broke the story, this is something of a third part to a trilogy of shows which include ‘WandaVison’ and the upcoming ‘Agatha All Along’, which would follow “White Vision” as he searches for a new purpose in life.

If you’ve been following the MCU, you’ll remember Ultron originally created Vision during the events of ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’. However, he opted to side with the Avengers over his “father”, helping them to defeat daddy-dearest. Vision was then killed off in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’. Bettany then returned to the role as part of the excellent ‘WandaVision’ series, where he was eventually resurrected as “White Vision”, a slightly different version of the character who had no memories of his previous life. The new TV show will be set after those events.

James Spader provided the voice of Ultron in the movie, and it appears will return in this new series to reprise the role. Ultron did seem to have been destroyed at the end of the movie, however, when the bad guy is effectively an AI, it is not impossible to think he may have found some way to survive by backing himself up and hiding away. Veteran actor Spader is just coming off the back of a ten-year stint as Raymond Reddington in NBC’s ‘The Blacklist’ which ended last year.

Terry Matalas was the showrunner on the WGA-nominated 3rd season of ‘Star Trek: Picard’. Matalas previously created the TV adaptation of ’12 Monkeys’, and worked on shows such as ‘MacGyver’, ‘Nikita’, ‘Nightflyers’, and ‘Star Trek: Enterprise’.

We should stress – this hasn’t been officially announced yet by Disney, but The Hollywood Reporter is usually a pretty solid source when it comes to these sorts of stories. We will, of course, let you know if/when it is officially revealed, or if there are more developments.

As this isn’t an official announcement from Disney, the untitled ‘Vision’ series is classed as “In Development”. We’ll let you know if/when we hear more.
