Prime Video Cancels ‘The Wheel of Time’ After 3 Seasons

by Dave Elliott

Prime Video has officially jammed a stick in the spokes of The Wheel of Time, confirming the fantasy epic has been cancelled after 3 seasons.

Based on Robert Jordan’s expansive 14-book saga, the series debuted in 2021 and quickly garnered a dedicated fan base. The story follows Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike), a member of the powerful Aes Sedai, as she embarks on a quest to find the Dragon Reborn—a prophesied figure destined to either save or doom the world.

While the series remained a solid performer for Prime Video over its three-season run, viewership did slip. Season 3 dropped out of Nielsen’s U.S. Top 10 Originals chart after just three weeks, which was a noticeable dip compared to the full-run chart presence of Seasons 1 and 2. It did manage a brief return to the Top 10 following the finale, landing at #10.

It’s important to note that Nielsen ratings only reflect U.S. audiences. Globally, The Wheel of Time still pulled in strong numbers, hitting the #1 spot on Prime Video in multiple countries. However, according to Deadline, which broke the news, sources report that the show’s overall performance didn’t quite justify its significant production costs, leading Amazon to explore alternative paths with lead studio Sony Pictures Television, ultimately deciding not to move forward with a fourth season. In anticipation of that possibility (and knowing the passionate fanbase the show has cultivated), the creative team designed the Season 3 finale to provide at least some sense of closure.

Season Three was primarily based on the fourth book of Jordan’s series, “The Shadow Rising,” and took viewers to many new regions and cities across the fictional continent of the Westlands, including the vast deserts of the Aiel Waste, the intoxicating and dangerous port city of Tanchico, and the forbidden and fog-shrouded ancient city of Rhuidean, where Rand and Moiraine experiences life-changing revelations. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, in Rand’s small hometown of Two Rivers, his lifelong friend Perrin Aybara (Marcus Rutherford) embarked on a personal journey, one which changed him forever.
