We’re back! After a slightly longer-than-planned summer break (sorry about that, but the podcast hammock was very comfy), Geektown Radio returns with Episode 466. I’m joined by Matt, and between the tidal wave of renewals, cancellations, Comic-Con announcements, and a frankly absurd amount of TV watching, we had a lot to catch up on.
This episode is a bit like the San Diego Comic-Con goodie bag: stuffed with exciting stuff, a couple of WTF surprises, and maybe one or two things you didn’t even realise you wanted.
Back With a Bang (and a Strong Coffee)
After several weeks away, we hit the ground running with a big catch-up on everything we’ve been watching. Matt has been busy finishing off shows and eyeing up some new ones, which naturally led us to a detour into football. Yes, the Lionesses’ Euro 2025 win gets a full breakdown, because when you play through a tournament with a fractured tibia like Lucy Bronze did, that deserves a standing ovation. Also, Chloe Kelly continues her habit of scoring winning goals at major tournaments. The football tangent was 100% Matt’s fault, by the way.
What We’ve Been Watching – Time Jumps, Murder Mysteries and Hallucinating Anti-Heroes
On my watchlist, I’ve been all over the TV spectrum. ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ continues to be a delightful mix of serious episodes and gloriously silly ones (there’s a holodeck murder mystery directed by Jonathan Frakes that is pure gold).
Over on Apple TV+, ‘Foundation’ returns with a 152-year time jump and a brilliantly unhinged, checked-out, “hipster emperor” version of Day. Meanwhile, ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ somehow revives Michael C. Hall’s titular serial killer, throws in a bunch of cameos, and pits him against Peter Dinklage and Neil Patrick Harris. This show is as wild as ever.
I also dipped into ‘Ballard’, the newest entry in the ‘Bosch’ universe. This time, Maggie Q takes the lead in a cold case unit funded by a shady politician. If you liked ‘Bosch’, this is very much its younger, edgier cousin.
And then there’s James Gunn’s ‘Creature Commandos’, an animated spinoff that’s essentially Suicide Squad but with monsters. It’s chaotic, violent, and very funny, so exactly what you’d expect.
Oh, and I also checked out ‘Bookish’, a post-WWII London-set crime series starring Mark Gatiss doing his best “Sherlock but with more tweed” impression. It’s lighter than your average murder show, like Death in Paradise with rationing.
Comic-Con and News – AKA “We Were Away for HOW Long?!”
While we were sunning ourselves (metaphorically), San Diego Comic-Con went full throttle.
- ‘Interview with the Vampire’ will officially rebrand as ‘The Vampire Lestat’ for Season 3, because apparently being a vampire rock star is a career choice now.
- Vince Gilligan (aka the man who gave us ‘Breaking Bad’) revealed his new Apple TV+ series ‘Pluribus’, a darkly intriguing drama starring Rhea Seehorn as “the most miserable person on earth who has to save humanity from happiness.” That’s a sentence only Vince Gilligan could write.
- Netflix confirmed it’s making a live-action ‘Assassin’s Creed’ series. After that movie? Brave.
- And over on HBO Max, they’re going full multiverse chaos with ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’, a ‘Big Bang Theory’ spinoff where Stuart from the comic shop accidentally triggers multiverse Armageddon. So yes, that’s happening.
Renewals, Cancellations and Other Rollercoasters
It wouldn’t be Geektown without the renewal/cancellation section, and this one is packed.
Coming back:
- ‘Murderbot’, ‘Invincible’, ‘Slow Horses’, ‘The Bear’, ‘Virgin River’ (now Netflix’s longest-running scripted series), ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’, and more.
- ‘Legend of Vox Machina’ will end with Season 5, but Critical Role fans can relax because ‘The Mighty Nein’ is on the way.
Gone but not forgotten:
-
‘Resident Alien’, ‘The Residence’, and ‘Dr. Odyssey’ (kind of – the cast contracts just quietly expired).
Oh, and ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ is also ending after 10 years. CBS says it’s because it was losing money. We’re not saying it’s to smooth over the Paramount sale… but it’s hard not to raise an eyebrow.
Coming Soon – Buckle Up
Plenty of exciting stuff is around the corner:
- ‘Fire Country’ (Sky Witness, 30th July) – delayed because real California was on fire, which felt a bit awkward.
- ‘Chief of War’ (Apple TV+, 1st August) – Jason Momoa unites Hawaii. Probably with axes.
- ‘Eyes of Wakanda’ (Disney+, 1st August) – four animated stories exploring Wakanda’s legacy.
- ‘Twisted Metal’ Season 2 (Paramount+, 1st August) – back for more bonkers, gun-toting, clown-filled fun.
This is a jam-packed episode, and it’s great to be back on the mic. So grab a coffee, settle in, and enjoy a massive catch-up of TV chaos, Comic-Con hype, and more shows than one human can realistically watch in a week.
