The Dark Passenger lives on. Showtime has officially renewed ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ for a second season, with Michael C. Hall (Six Feet Under) confirming the news in a video message to fans, saying, “We’ve been greenlit for another season. There’s more to come. The writers’ room is assembling now. Details will be forthcoming, but I wanted to be the first to let you know that the story continues.”
‘Dexter: Resurrection’ picks up weeks after the end of ‘Dexter: New Blood’, with Dexter Morgan waking from a coma after taking a bullet to the chest from his own son, Harrison (Jack Alcott). Wracked with guilt, he heads to New York City determined to find Harrison and make amends. Of course, nothing is ever that simple for Dexter, especially when Miami Metro’s Angel Batista (David Zayas) turns up with awkward questions and his past starts closing in fast.
The series also stars Uma Thurman (Kill Bill), Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine (The Chi), Kadia Saraf (FBI), Dominic Fumusa (Nurse Jackie), Emilia Suárez, James Remar (Dexter), and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), with guest appearances from Neil Patrick Harris, Krysten Ritter, Eric Stonestreet, and David Dastmalchian. Developed by Clyde Phillips, the series is produced by Paramount Television Studios and Counterpart Studios, with Hall also serving as an executive producer.
‘Dexter: Resurrection’ is very much Dexter back on form. After the divisive end to the original series, ‘Dexter: New Blood’ made steps toward redemption, but ‘Resurrection’ truly feels like the return of the sharp, meticulous killer we know and love… well, “love” might not be the right word for a fictional serial killer, but it feels wrong not to say it.
There was also ‘Dexter: Original Sin’, a surprisingly solid prequel that explored Dexter’s first kill and the beginnings of his dark moral logic. Rather than descending into evil, the younger Dexter starts to see his killings as a necessary service, targeting murderers, rapists and predators who have escaped justice. It is all deeply wrong, of course, but in Dexter’s mind, there is a twisted kind of order to it, helped by “Harry’s code”. Still, even Showtime decided there can be too much Dexter for one universe, and the prequel was not renewed for a second season.
‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Season 2 does not yet have a premiere date, but will air on Showtime in the US and stream on Paramount+ in the UK.
