Ryan Hurst Cast As Kratos In Prime Video’s ‘God of War’ TV Series

by Dave Elliott

Prime Video has finally found its Ghost of Sparta, with Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy, The Walking Dead) officially cast as Kratos in the upcoming live-action adaptation of God of War. The series comes from Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, working in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions, and already carries a hefty two-season order.

The casting is an especially neat bit of mythological symmetry. Hurst is already part of the God of War family, having previously voiced Thor in ‘God of War Ragnarök’, a performance that earned him a BAFTA nomination and made him a standout favourite with fans. Moving from voicing a thunder god to embodying the franchise’s central figure gives the series a rare sense of continuity with the games, rather than a clean break from them.

Kratos, the beating heart of the entire franchise, is Spartan by birth and god by nature. Raised in a brutal martial culture, he rose through the ranks of Sparta before making a fateful deal with Ares, the Greek God of War, trading his soul for victory in battle. Across ten hugely successful games, Kratos carved a bloody path through mortals, monsters and gods alike, becoming one of the most recognisable characters in modern pop culture. Stoic, unstoppable, and haunted by his past, he is as much defined by tragedy as by violence.

The live-action series will closely follow the narrative direction of the last two games, shifting the focus from pure rage to something far more complicated. At the centre of the story is Kratos’ relationship with his ten-year-old son Atreus. Following the death of Faye, wife and mother, father and son embark on a dangerous journey to scatter her ashes. Along the way, Kratos attempts to teach Atreus how to survive as a god in a hostile world, while Atreus quietly challenges his father to rediscover his humanity. That emotional push and pull is expected to be the heartbeat of the show.

Behind the camera, Emmy-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye (Sh?gun, The Boys, Fallout) is set to direct the first two episodes, signalling a cinematic approach from the outset. The series is overseen by showrunner Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander), who also serves as executive producer and writer. He is joined by an extensive executive producing team including Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee and Brad Van Arragon, with Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia and Ben McGinnis serving as co-executive producers.

Production is currently in pre-production in Vancouver, with wider casting now underway. While no premiere window has yet been confirmed, the scale of the creative team and the immediate two-season commitment underline just how seriously Prime Video and PlayStation are taking this adaptation.

God of War’ does not yet have a premiere date but will air on Prime Video in the UK. If I want to keep track of this or any other shows, I can add them via our Never Miss system, and I’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
