Lock up the relics. Lara Croft has entered the tomb.

Prime Video has revealed the first official image of Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones) as Lara Croft, marking the start of production on its new live-action Tomb Raider TV series. The image, released to celebrate cameras rolling, shows Turner in full adventurer mode, complete with several instantly recognisable elements pulled straight from the long-running video game franchise.

The new series is based on the iconic ‘Tomb Raider’ games, following the globe-trotting exploits of world-famous archaeologist and adventurer Lara Croft. This version aims to expand the mythology, blending familiar characters from the games with brand-new faces created specifically for the television adaptation.

Turner leads an impressively stacked ensemble cast. Joining her are Sigourney Weaver (Alien), Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter), Martin Bobb-Semple (Pandora), Jack Bannon (Pennyworth), John Heffernan (Dracula), Bill Paterson (Outlander), Paterson Joseph (The Leftovers), Sasha Luss (Anna), Juliette Motamed (The Ballad of Renegade Nell), Celia Imrie (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), and August Wittgenstein (The Crown).

Several of those roles will be immediately familiar to fans of the games. Martin Bobb-Semple plays Zip, Lara’s trusted tech expert and long-time ally. Jason Isaacs appears as Atlas DeMornay, reimagined here as Lara’s uncle, while Bill Paterson takes on the role of Winston, the Croft family’s long-serving butler.

Other characters are entirely new creations for the series. Jack Bannon plays Gerry, Lara’s personal pilot with an unhealthy enthusiasm for snacks, while John Heffernan portrays David, a weary government official increasingly out of his depth. Celia Imrie appears as Francine, the champagne-loving Head of Advancement at the British Museum, alongside Juliette Motamed as Georgia, a curator fiercely committed to proper historical preservation.

On the antagonistic side, Sasha Luss plays Sasha, a formidable new rival for Lara, with August Wittgenstein as Lukas, an illegal raider whose past is closely tied to Croft’s own. Paterson Joseph rounds out the cast as Thomas Warner, a senior government figure tasked with managing a situation that is quickly spiralling out of control. Looming over it all is Sigourney Weaver as Evelyn Wallis, a powerful and mysterious figure eager to exploit Lara’s unique abilities.

Behind the scenes, the series is led by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), who serves as creator, writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner alongside Chad Hodge. Direction and executive production duties are handled by Jonathan Van Tulleken, with Amazon MGM Studios producing alongside Crystal Dynamics, Story Kitchen, and Legendary Television.

Speaking about stepping into the role, Turner said, “I’ve been a long-time fan of Tomb Raider and the character of Lara. She has always felt for me, very emboldened in a male-dominated world. She’s a fierce female role model!”

Waller-Bridge added, “Tomb Raider boasts a plethora of iconic characters. I am thrilled to have been able to bring some personal and fan favourites to the screen while also introducing a few new rascals of our own to the mix. This cast is beyond my wildest dreams!”

Peter Friedlander, Head of Amazon MGM Studios, commented, “Tomb Raider has always been defined by bold storytelling and unforgettable characters, and these new cast members bring incredible depth and gravitas to the series. With talents like Sigourney Weaver and Jason Isaacs joining the ensemble, we’re elevating this world in exciting new ways.”

Tomb Raider’ does not yet have a premiere date but will air on Prime Video in the UK. If I want to keep track of this or any other shows, I can add them via our Never Miss system, and I’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
