‘The Boroughs’ has finally unveiled its first teaser, giving us a proper look at Netflix’s eerie new supernatural drama from Jeffrey Addiss (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance) and Will Matthews (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance), with The Duffer Brothers (Stranger Things) on board as executive producers.
Set in a seemingly idyllic retirement community in the New Mexico desert, ‘The Boroughs’ follows a grieving newcomer who ends up joining forces with a group of unlikely residents after a monstrous encounter reveals something far darker lurking beneath the surface. Judging by the teaser, this looks like it’s very much playing in that sweet spot between mystery, horror, heart, and slightly off-kilter small-town weirdness that the Duffers do so well.
The cast is packed with familiar faces too, including Alfred Molina (Spider-Man: No Way Home), Geena Davis (A League of Their Own), Alfre Woodard (Salem’s Lot), Denis O’Hare (American Horror Story), Clarke Peters (The Wire), Bill Pullman (The Sinner), Jena Malone (The Hunger Games), Jane Kaczmarek (Malcolm in the Middle), Ed Begley Jr. (Better Call Saul), and Dee Wallace (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial), amongst others.
According to Addiss and Matthews, they always wanted ‘The Boroughs’ to feel “equal parts scary, mysterious, exciting and emotional,” while the Duffer Brothers have described the central group as another lovable bunch of misfits, albeit ones with a few more years on them than the kids of ‘Stranger Things’.
Ben Taylor (Sex Education) executive produces and directs the first two episodes, with Hilary Leavitt also executive producing under the Duffers’ Upside Down Pictures banner.
Netflix has been quietly building quite an intriguing line-up beyond ‘Stranger Things’, and ‘The Boroughs’ looks like one of its more unusual genre swings, basically asking what happens when a retirement village gets its own supernatural nightmare. Which, honestly, is a pretty great hook.
‘The Boroughs’ premieres Wednesday, 21st May 2026 on Netflix.
