‘The Rookie’ Bags Season 9 Renewal At ABC

by Dave Elliott

ABC has officially renewed The Rookie for Season 9, extending the run of the Nathan Fillion (Castle, Firefly) led police drama and cementing its place as one of the network’s longest-running scripted series. The renewal makes it ABC’s third-longest-running drama, behind only Grey’s Anatomy and NYPD Blue, which is not bad going for a show that started life as a fairly straightforward rookie-cop procedural and somehow turned into a proper long-haul hit.

What makes the pickup more interesting is that ‘The Rookie’ has kept growing in unusual ways as it has aged. The series has found a surprisingly strong younger audience, helped in part by TikTok virality, while also continuing to perform well on streaming. That mix, along with a lean production model and California tax credits, appears to have helped keep the show financially attractive at a time when plenty of long-running broadcast dramas are getting more expensive and far less secure.

Creator Alexi Hawley has also been talking up just how sustainable the format has become, noting that the show can shift between action, comedy, romance, and bigger event-style episodes without feeling stuck in one lane. That flexibility has always been one of ‘The Rookie’’s strengths. One week it can be a tense operation gone sideways, the next it can lean into relationship drama or one of its slightly bonkers high-concept detours. Somehow, it usually makes that work.

There is also the practical side. The show has managed to stay relatively cost-efficient despite filming in Los Angeles, and was reportedly renewed again without the sort of visible budget-slashing that often follows veteran network dramas. The latest California tax credit award for the upcoming season was reportedly worth $34.9 million, said to be the largest incentive the series has received so far.

For UK viewers, we are a little behind the US airing, so I’ve been careful not to put spoilers in here. I will tease that the next episode to go out in the US is one of the fun “true crime, mockumentary episodes” that they’ve been doing the last few seasons.

There is also still a possible expansion of the franchise on the table. Hawley has said he is “hopeful and optimistic” about ‘The Rookie: North’, the proposed new spinoff starring Jay Ellis (Top Gun: Maverick, Insecure), with the pilot now completed and delivered to ABC. Whether that moves forward remains to be seen, but it does suggest the network still sees ‘The Rookie’ as a brand with room to grow.

The Rookie’ Season 8 is currently airing Tuesdays on Sky Witness in the UK. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
