Lanterns Teaser Reveals Laura Linney In HBO Max’s Earthbound Green Lantern Drama

by Dave Elliott

HBO Max has released a new teaser for Lanterns, the upcoming DC Studios drama which brings the Green Lantern universe back to live-action TV this August, with Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) and Kelly Macdonald (Line Of Duty) leading the cast.

The new teaser also gives us a first look at Laura Linney (Ozark), who has joined the DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television series. She appears alongside a rather stacked ensemble which also includes Garret Dillahunt (Fear The Walking Dead), Poorna Jagannathan (Never Have I Ever), Jason Ritter (Parenthood), Ulrich Thomsen (The New Pope), Nathan Fillion (The Rookie), J. Alphonse Nicholson (P-Valley) and Jasmine Cephas Jones (Blindspotting).

Unlike some of DC’s more cosmic adventures, ‘Lanterns’ is keeping at least one boot firmly planted on Earth. The series follows new recruit John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, two intergalactic cops who are drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery while investigating a murder in the American heartland. So, less “space opera with glowing jewellery,” more “True Detective, but someone might be able to punch a hole through the moon if things get out of hand.”

Behind the camera, the series comes with some serious creative weight. The pilot is co-written by Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindelof (Watchmen) and Tom King (Mister Miracle), who are also co-creators on the series. Mundy serves as showrunner, with James Hawes (Slow Horses) directing the first two episodes. Stephen Williams (Watchmen), Geeta Vasant Patel (House Of The Dragon) and Alik Sakharov (Game Of Thrones) are also directing episodes.

Executive producers include Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt and Hawes. The series is produced by HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios, and is based on the DC comic characters from “Green Lantern.”

The Green Lantern corner of DC has always had huge potential on screen, but it has also been, shall we say, a slightly cursed patch of superhero real estate. Taking the concept down a darker, more grounded investigative route is certainly an interesting way to approach it, and with this creative team, ‘Lanterns’ is shaping up to be one of the more intriguing entries in the new DC Studios slate.

Lanterns‘ premieres Monday, 17th August 2026 on HBO Max.
