The BBC has released a first-look image of Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things, Industry) as Charles Shelby in the next generation of ‘Peaky Blinders‘, as filming continues on the eagerly awaited new chapter of Steven Knight’s Birmingham gangster saga.
Written and created by Steven Knight, the new era of ‘Peaky Blinders’ is set a decade after World War Two, as the race to rebuild Birmingham becomes a brutal contest of opportunity, power, and danger. The city may be changing, but the Shelby name still carries more than a little weight.
Heaton plays Charles Shelby, who has fought a violent war, much of it behind enemy lines, and is now trying to embrace something approaching normality. He hasn’t seen his half-brother Duke, played by Jamie Bell (All of Us Strangers, Rocketman), in years, having severed all ties with the Peaky Blinders gang and the hedonistic Shelby lifestyle. But, as ever with this family, the question is whether you can ever really escape your own blood.
Also starring in the new series are Jessica Brown Findlay (Silo, The Flatshare), Lashana Lynch (The Day of The Jackal, No Time to Die), and Lucy Karczewski (Stereophonic) in her TV debut, although details of their roles are being kept under wraps for now.
The new chapter is produced by Banijay UK companies Kudos (SAS Rogue Heroes, House of Guinness) and Garrison Drama, the company behind ‘Peaky Blinders’ series 1-6 and the feature film ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’. Filming is currently taking place in and around Digbeth Loc. Studios in Birmingham.
The BBC has ordered two new series, both made up of six 60-minute episodes. The drama will premiere on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK, and on Netflix across the rest of the world.
The production is also supported by the West Midlands Combined Authority, with ‘Peaky Blinders’ becoming the first commission following the new BBC partnership agreement with the WMCA and Create Central to expand BBC and partner production investment in the West Midlands.
Since the original series launched on BBC Two in 2013, ‘Peaky Blinders’ has grown into a global phenomenon, picking up a string of awards along the way, including the 2018 BAFTA for Best Drama Series. The recent feature film ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’ also proved a huge hit for Netflix, topping the streamer’s global film chart for two weeks following launch.
‘Peaky Blinders‘ does not yet have a premiere date but will air on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
