‘Star Wars Zero Company’ Brings Clone Wars Turn-Based Tactics To PC & Consoles This August

EA and Lucasfilm Games have announced ‘Star Wars Zero Company’, a new single-player turn-based tactics game set during the Clone Wars, launching this August for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Developed by Bit Reactor in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, the game puts players in command of Zero Company, a shadowy band of operatives working in the darker corners of the Clone Wars. It is very much taking the “special ops squad in a galaxy far, far away” approach, which feels like a rather smart fit for a turn-based tactics game.

Players step into the role of Hawks, a former Galactic Republic officer who now leads Zero Company. The squad is made up of an unconventional mix of professionals for hire from across the galaxy, including a Clone Trooper, a Mandalorian from the ancient Clan Verminoth, a Jedi Padawan, and more. Their mission is to hunt down Kundri Fathom, leader of the Separatist-aligned cult known as the Infinite Coil.

“Our team has poured everything we love about Star Wars into Zero Company,” said Greg Foertsch, CEO and Creative Director at Bit Reactor. “The bold characters, powerful storytelling, striking settings and the sense of heart beneath the battles in Star Wars has helped us create an experience that pushes the tactics genre forward by combining deep gameplay with cinematic elegance. We’ve worked hand-in-hand with Lucasfilm Games to create an authentic Star Wars story packed with unique new characters, robust character customization, a new ship, Separatist Droids and much more, all rooted in the conflict of The Clone Wars.”

The newly released gameplay trailer shows off the game’s cinematic take on turn-based tactics, alongside an original story featuring both new and returning Clone Wars characters. From the sound of things, this is not just “XCOM with lightsabers”, although, frankly, that would already be enough to get a lot of people interested. Instead, Bit Reactor seems to be leaning into the covert-war angle, with the Clone Wars providing the perfect messy backdrop for morally grey missions, shifting loyalties, and a squad of specialists who are not exactly following the standard Republic playbook.

“Star Wars Zero Company delivers an entirely new experience in the galaxy and for our fans,” said Douglas Reilly, VP and GM of Lucasfilm Games. “It pairs cinematic storytelling with strategic gameplay in a way that feels fresh for the franchise. Some of the most interesting stories come from new perspectives, and Zero Company explores the Clone Wars from deep within the shadows of the conflict, through a lens we haven’t seen before, while still feeling completely authentic to the world fans know.”

Between missions, players will operate from Zero Company’s base, The Den. From there, you can recruit and develop Operators, upgrade facilities, buy new equipment, and choose your next mission from the holotable. On the battlefield, squad bonds will play a key role, with relationships between authored characters and player-created Operators unlocking new support abilities, cross-training benefits, and improved stats.

There is also a sizeable galaxy map, featuring more than 150 planets, with player choices affecting how the campaign unfolds. That should hopefully give the game a bit of that “one more mission” pull which the best tactics games thrive on.

Customisation is also a major part of the game. Hawks and recruited Operators can be created from eight Star Wars species: Devaronian, Human, Neimoidian, Ovissian, Togruta, Twi’lek, Weequay and Zabrak. Players can customise voices, outfits, appearance, specialisations and talents over time, allowing them to build a squad suited to their preferred tactical approach.

Pre-orders are now open. The Standard Edition is priced at $49.99 on PC and $59.99 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, while the Deluxe Edition is priced at $59.99 on PC and $69.99 on consoles. All pre-orders include the Crystalline Astromech Cosmetic Pack, featuring an R3 droid, translucent “crystalline” astromech heads for R4 and R5 droid variants, and the BR-1 droid, which originates in ‘Star Wars Zero Company’. The Deluxe Edition pre-order includes all pre-order bonus content alongside the Deluxe Edition extras.

The soundtrack, featuring an original score by Grammy Award-winning composer Gordy Haab, will also be released on launch day via Walt Disney Records.
